Early on in my driving days, I got stuck in Park while parked on a hill and had to get help to rock the car while attempting to get it out of Park, with a loud bang! And after seeing the fragile-looking Park pawl and detent in most automatic transmissions, I got in the habit of applying the emergency brake every time I parked, even in the garage; old semi truck habit.

I always use it. It may not always be necessary, but it can’t hurt and it seems like a good habit to get into so that you don’t forget on those occasions that you do need it.

i always wondered why people call a parking brake an emergency brake. Kind of the same reason people say "whats the VIN Number"

:)

just my little rant
Old school term, I guess. Like "Dial 555xxx-xxxx" for a phone number.
Why do we park in the driveway and drive on the parkway?
And I don't care what Stellantis says, It's a Dodge pickup!

I have a sloped driveway, so "always". It's become so much habit that I do it in flat parking lots too. The nice part about the hand brake style the Ranger has is it's much easier for muscle memory.

I always use it out of habit.
An automatic transmission is not meant to be a parking brake. Especially on a hill!

I will leave it off when we get our ice storms down here. Luckily I have a flat drive way!

I got out of the habit with my ‘01 Ranger because it would often stick. Now that it’s located in the console, I never really think about it.

I always use it.

  1. Stop in parking spot
  2. put car in neutral
  3. set parking brake
  4. let off foot brake
  5. put in park

This process completely unloads the transmission of all load when putting it in park. I can tell you that I never have issues shifting out of park. To drive, I put my foot on the brake, put down the parking brake, shift, then let off the foot brake. There is absolutely no load on the parking pawl.
