I did mine on the ground with the wheel on as I was by myself. Just removed the wheel center cap. Gave just enough room for the socket to fit through. How would you torque them with the wheel on?
I've always had someone stand on the brake while I torque it, before the wheel goes on.
Also, you can put it in 4Lo. That keeps the wheel from spinning, though it does allow a small amount of play before it engages.
id have to check, but I don’t think my socket would fit. I know my Ranger had a larger axle nut than another Ranger, build dates were similar.I did mine on the ground with the wheel on as I was by myself. Just removed the wheel center cap. Gave just enough room for the socket to fit through.
The wheels on the ground is the way testing of lugnut/wheel retention at Ford. Assembly Plant uses mutlispindle nut runner tool on the line for initial torque with wheels in the air. Which by the way, was for many years set at 100 ft-lbs, minimum. Validation is can also be done on a Flat Track Machine. https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/darwin-award-thread.13247/page-16 (scroll down to my post)What's the best/correct way!?
Spelled wrong ? I think i know him ...with his name tattooed on his knuckles.
This is what happens when you let your illiterate cellmate give you a tattoo.Spelled wrong ? I think i know him ...
he was also likely paid by the hour too.Without someone to hold their foot on the brake, I tighten as much as I can in the air, then I lower the Jack until the wheel won’t spin under load but isn’t bearing all the weight. Then, I torque it in stages 100, 150, 175, 200. Then, I lower it completely and torque it to spec. 221? Don’t exactly recall.
Why do I do it in stages? Because that’s how I was taught by a salty old Harley riding, heavy duty mechanic with his name tattooed on his knuckles. It made sense at the time and he was a bit intimidating. ?
I doubt he was doggin’ it to pad his time sheet and I certainly wouldn’t have suggested it to him unless I wanted his name spelled backwards on my jaw. ?he was also likely paid by the hour too.
Wait your nuts are bigger? what size are they?id have to check, but I don’t think my socket would fit. I know my Ranger had a larger axle nut than another Ranger, build dates were similar.
36mm vs @UnregistredHypercam2’s 32mm.Wait your nuts are bigger? what size are they?
