How would you torque them with the wheel on?

I've always had someone stand on the brake while I torque it, before the wheel goes on.

Also, you can put it in 4Lo. That keeps the wheel from spinning, though it does allow a small amount of play before it engages.

I did mine on the ground with the wheel on as I was by myself. Just removed the wheel center cap. Gave just enough room for the socket to fit through.

id have to check, but I don’t think my socket would fit. I know my Ranger had a larger axle nut than another Ranger, build dates were similar.

When the wheel is in the air I will get the lug nuts seated, but not torqued. After the wheel is on the ground I torque the wheels. I have done this for years and never had a problem.

With all that said, if you go to torque the lugs and it doesn't move when the wrench said it is good.... it is way too tight..... the lug should move a little when torquing the lug

Without someone to hold their foot on the brake, I tighten as much as I can in the air, then I lower the Jack until the wheel won’t spin under load but isn’t bearing all the weight. Then, I torque it in stages 100, 150, 175, 200. Then, I lower it completely and torque it to spec. 221? Don’t exactly recall.

Why do I do it in stages? Because that’s how I was taught by a salty old Harley riding, heavy duty mechanic with his name tattooed on his knuckles. It made sense at the time and he was a bit intimidating. ?

I doubt he was doggin’ it to pad his time sheet and I certainly wouldn’t have suggested it to him unless I wanted his name spelled backwards on my jaw. ?
