Your overall thread depth looks like you have a lot of miles on the tires and not much left before you hit the Tread Wear Indicator - That is my primary concern. Secondarily are the micro cracks you are seeing that looks like the tire has been run too hot.

Since you live in Atlanta where it is hot this time of year and since you guys see lots of rain, I would say they are safe enough to drive around the neighborhood / residential areas (low speed) on dry days or drive up to the tire store.

But if those were on my truck I wouldn't drive them on the highway or in wet weather.

It's probably 60/40 or even 70/30 that they will hold for your trip, but if I said there was a 30% chance you are going to blow a tire, loaded and at highway speeds, roll your truck, and wrap it around a tree, would you still go? I wouldn't. Too much risk. Too high a consequence. Too little a reward. But that's just me and how I line up and look at life.

Wishing you all the best and safe travels.

Couple of problems. There is no postponing this trip. It's a funeral that was delayed by COVID. Also, no one has my dam tires in stock. So They can get me in, but they don't have tires to install. Ughhhh.

I'm going to drive the tires one way, and I have an appointment in NJ for new tires. Our fleet guy here at work says they are fine and suggest I actually keep them on a set of trash wheels for off-roading.

I'd have no problem driving those on road, or some off-road use. Tread depth is my only concern off-road as I have the same ATM and even new they aren't great off-road.

As to the cracks, meh, not much of a concern IMO. I'd plan to replace them as soon as convenient, but not in a panic over the next month(s), and wouldn't go out of my way on vacation to book it somewhere out of state.

Cracks generally lead to slow leaks, not blow-outs. It's not impossible of course, but they look small, and low risk. It's not a separation peel or manufacturing defect, just some hard wear. I'd confirm my spare is good, and my jack/lug wrench are good, then be on my way without concern.

Are these really Duratracs? The sidewall looks like that of Hankook Dynapro ATMs, which are the tires that came stock in my 2020 FX4.
At least the bottom picture of the tires on his first post are not Duratracs; they are the Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 as you mentioned above.

Edit: I should have read post #23 first before posting. Sorry.

On my last truck, a '93 toyota, I only drove like 5K miles a year. I replaced the tires once in 25 years. The replacements tires were probably well over 10 years old, and I never once cared what they looked like.

Was I wrong? Probably. I'm still alive. YMMV.

You were pretty wrong and kinda dangerous (if you got out on the highway at speed w it), but this from the guy (me) who adjusts his brake rod so...

Your first picture seems to indicate that you have barely more than 3/32nds left on the tread.
(note the wear indicators) 3/32nds is the legal minimum.
Marginal shallow tread does run cooler and gets better traction on dry pavement in warm weather.
At this point, wet or any low traction surface starts to become dangerous(thus the wear indicators).
So,if you can afford the time and expense, now would be a great time to get new tires and the cracks are pretty much a non-issue at this point

Statistically, for four tires to show the same defect at the same time and level, is very unlikely.

Old tires get cracks?

Enjoy your trip...

John,

I saw this thread this morning - by now, you’re well on your way and I hope all is going well. If I lived in the ATL area and learned of your situation earlier, I would have come over with my factory take offs for you to borrow.

Or we could have done a simple garage swap of the wheels I’m currently running to get you on your way with confidence. I have thousands of miles left on my Grabbers and with your lift, they would have fit without issue. You’d also know how 275/70R17s looked on your rig.

Anyway, good luck and safe travels!

Made it to New Jersey fine, other than it being one hell of a long trip and my GPS was unknowingly set to "avoid all toll roads". I wonder how much time I lost before I realized that! New tires go on the truck this morning!

Great news! (And the money you saved on tolls can go towards the new tires!)
