My 2020 Ranger did not come with a trailer hitch (so dumb it's not standard) and I am planning on adding one. I've been looking through all the threads about trailer hitches, and I had a question. I see a lot of folks are getting the Curt hitch, and then purchasing wiring harness and 7-pin connector (https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/ford-trailer-tow-harness-connector-fu5z14489a?c=az0x, https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/ford-wire-harness-kb3z15k868d?c=az0x)

But my question is why buy the 7 pin connector? I crawled underneath and see there is a 4 pin there already. If I'm just pulling a trailer without trailer brakes, is there any reason to get the Tasca Parts wiring harness and harness connector?

Thanks!

You wouldn't need the 7 pin if you have surge brakes or no brakes at all. Check your state regulations regarding trailer weight requiring brakes. To me, id rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

That's a good point.

My 2020 scab XLT has no hitch, but has this 4 pin below the driver side rear bumper. How would you connect it to this Ford part? :

You'd prob just need an adapter like https://tinyurl.com/ye9d54y6 but I've not used one so not sure how it would translate power that's needed for some trailers. Also prob wouldn't work for powered brakes. If you need those, you'd need one of the wiring adapters I linked above.

Can't say for sure because mine has the factory tow package. I believe there is a harness needed to go between the 7-pin socket and the main harness that the 4-pin plugs into. You need to remove the 4-pin harness. That will connect to the brake wire under the dash and the 12 volt feed from the fuse block.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong. If you use an aftermarket 7-pin adapter you will need to run your own brake and 12 volt feed wires from the front of the truck.

Easy to do plug and play other than cutting the hole out lined next to the license plate.

all the info you need is in these threads.

This guy did a really good write-up installing 7 pin
post lists the different harnesses

I don't really need the 7 pin but i like having the 4/7 pin plug over the bumper.

My truck 2019 XLT (with back up sensors) installed the following:
  • 7/4 pin plug, part # FU5Z-14489-A
  • Wire Harness part # KB3Z-15K868-D
  • Curt hitch #13417

When they installed my Curt Hitch, they also installed a 7 pin and 4 pin dual plug as I have both type trailers.

I added the Curt hitch and I use the 4 pin that came with my truck and no issues!
