The only issue I had with the tranny in my Ranger is that it upshifted way to low a rpm for the engine to be happy. Mine was much like what ctechbob listed in his post above. After living with a 2.3 Ecoboost for 7 years and about 120k accumulated miles the engine just does not like to have any kind of load on it below 1500 rpm. Tow mode improves that and Sport goes to far.

Initially I put the FP tune on it which helped a lot and I was willing to live with it but when gas prices started going up I didn't want to be paying for 93 octane when I was rarely taking advantage of it so I went back to stock. I contacted Unleashed about some custom tranny tuning and after three revisions to the tune he initially provided I have been a happy camper.

95% of my driving is around town at 40 to 50 mpg. The tranny spends most of its time in 7th gear and only shifts to 8th near 50 mph after some sustained time at that speed. It only shifts to 9th and 10th at hiway speeds. It readily downshifts as I slow down and the rpm only drops below 1500 rpm when I take my foot off the gas. There has been zero impact to my gas mileage, still get 22.5 to 24.0 mpg in my normal driving and have never had a tank average drop below 20.

It's been over 6000 miles since the tranny tuning and I have not felt the need to lock out gears or use tow & sport modes. The only peculiarity has been sometimes at low speeds in the lower gears you feel the torque converter locking and unlocking. Because you don't feel it happen all the time it is noticed.

So the explorers use the 10r60. Hated that when i had one for a rental.

When i had my 21 tremor it felt way better, only quirk was a cold 3-4 hard shift, but other than that, no issues, but only 17k miles.

On my 18 raptor, it also had a hard 3-4 shift, and some weird downshfiting hard clunks. Rare, but not at all welcome. That had around 80k miles.

My 20 raptor so far has been smooth as butter with 35k miles, and transmission flushed at 30k.

As far as adaptive transmission learning, i have zero data to back it up, but i do notice it change slightly depending on how i drive in that of responsiveness to light throttle, whether it will downshift or hold the gear or not at the same speed.

I will say between the 4 vehicles, sport mode has been different in each one, with the tremor and 20 raptor being my favorites.

I have just under 20000 miles and my transmission is super smooth. Knock on wood, no problems (as in hard shifting or downshifting) as of now.

I have 2019 and 2020 Rangers. My 20 shifts butter smooth and the 19 had delayed and very harsh 1-2 and 3-4 shifts. Complained to service dept and she said the 19 is different and has 8 speeds and the 20 is a 10 speed and the shifting is normal. I guess she came from GM. Waited to next oil change and got different service writer and explained to him to try it cold and hot. (slightly better when hot). Called me the next day done. Replaced valve body and 12 qts fluid and it is now buttery smooth as the 2020 is. When this trans is right it is real smooth.

I suspect many of the transmission complaints are misattributed and actually caused by something other than the transmission. (Slip joint, egr sensor, etc.) But the bad diagnoses just get repeated over and over and become "common knowledge".

From a person that has two of Ford 10 speed transmissions ('18 Mustang, '20 Ranger) I'll give you my educated, and through critique. The transmissions are just damn stupid. The one in my wife's Mustang, even after a re-programming still doesn't change like I think it should. I've given up, and if it takes a dump that's what I bought an extended warranty for. The one in my Ranger does do better, and it changes up/down better than yours. I wish I had something to help you, but I truely don't. I will say that I wish Ford would have stuck with the old 6 speed auto's. Those seemed bullit proof, and I've owned several that never missed a beat. Maybe you can get your dealer to re program yours to see if that helps. Good luck.

My transmission is harsh as hell too. When coming to a stop, if I don't slow down and come to a stop a certain way, it gives me a "thump" that feels like I just got rear ended. I just learned to live with it. Up-shifts are smooth, but downshifts around town is horrible. There are times when the stars align, and the transmission runs super smooth, but most of the time I have the above issues. Transmission is probably my biggest complaint with this truck

Thats me also , i am going to lube that damn slip yoke and see if that helps with getting rear ended , mechanic at dealer test drove and said "no issues" , but he was holding his neck when he got back, , so...

That is the exact same thing I feel when stopping.

The thump you feel when coming to a reasonably quick stop is the driveshaft slip yoke. Lube will fix it.

That is something I tried first. Used the recommended lubricant and replaced the boot.

Feels like old school Hot Rod with high stall torque converter...why can't I find any information on what is causing this? How does one track down which parts need fixing? The worse part is the inconsistency...sometimes it's glass smooth, other times not so much...

I think a lot of this has to do with the characteristic of combining a heavyish vehicle+ turbo 4 banger+ a beefy 10-speed transmission. As others have stated this thing does have about 5 different personalities.
