Windshield chips/cracks

I've had my 2020 since new, and somehow I've never had so many windshield chips as on this truck. One of them developed into about an 8 inch crack, and it's the last straw. Is anyone else wondering if Ford when with cheap garbage glass?

Does anyone happen to know if there are different quality levels to replacement windshields?

Last summer I was quoted $550 for a ford windshield and $350 for aftermarket. I said patch and see what happens

Windshield cracks are not a widely reported issue on this forum. A few reports of it here and there but hardly a common topic.

I would think that windshields are required to meet certain safety standards and that Ford meets or exceeds them. I doubt they’re using “cheap garbage glass”.

On a part like that I would go with OEM
not sure if after market is the same but the OEM has an imprint lettering it says SoundScreen I noticed it one day and had to look it up to see WTF that was, some kind of sound dampener tech.
"SoundScreen is a special laminated automotive glass with a sound-absorbent vinyl layer between two glass sheets, designed by Carlex to significantly reduce road and wind noise for a quieter Ford or Lincoln"
ask your insurance company, most have glass coverage standard ....
Its probably BS but one more way to get another $100 out of you and give you one more failure point

I just had my windshield replaced, and had to ask for OEM which had the sound film and Ranger decal on it. No issue from insurance. Safelite did the work. If I didn't ask Safelite, they would have put in an aftermarket.

Yes, I always ask for OEM and it's usually covered by insurance.

Road trip to a no deductible state. The crack happened there. New windshield without a deductible and no ding on insurance. State taxes cover it. Florida and maybe AZ are like that. I had 3 for free in FL. One in AZ but do not remember if I paid a deductible or not.

Buy a kit off amazon and learn how to fix them yourself. Nothing to lose. I have repaired a good solid 20 chips between 3 rangers. They do not look like professional jobs but none of them have run.

Just go to the university of you tube. This is what i use. And be sure you work in the shade. Carport or garage is best.

Yes, I always ask for OEM and it's usually covered by insurance.

Safelite replaced mine a few months back with OEM cost me 250.00 - no deductible state for no OEM window

New York, I didnt pay any deductible, it was painless and easy, one call to Geico they made the Apt and safelite was here in one day...

In ID we choose our deductible for glass. I pay $100

No glass deductible in AZ. I've had one done in my '19 Ranger and one in a rental car that caught a rock 5 miles from the house. Called my insurance company on Monday and they made all the arraignments with Budget and covered it with zero deductible. I also had a small chip that they came out to repair for free too. My insurance even said to go ahead and just replace the windshield but it was so small I figured I'd just have them repair it and see how it goes.

There are differences in windshields just like any automotive part. Cheaper glass may have aberrations such as clarity issues.
