I always cost the threads and gasket with new oil.Ranger Bill - Just posted what caused this to happen if you used normal tightening of the filter when you installed it.
If you do not place a coat of oil on the gasket during install, when you go to remove the filter the gasket is now hardened and dry and wants to stick to the housing and adds a great amount of resistance in breaking the (now bonded) gasket.
By adding a coat of oil, keeps the gasket soft and pliable.
I thought you said this was the fifth stuck filter?Me, first one I had like this. I've had them loose when I was 12, but that was 40 years ago.
Long ago, I went 5 years and 25,000 miles in my old FJ40! Had the opportunity to rebuild the engine later and all looked great! Go synthetic oil.I always cost the threads and gasket with new oil.
This was the longest I've gone on oil. 50 miles till 0% life
The FJ 40 had the filter mounted with the bottom facing down, no way to remove it without oil leaking out. I put wax paper down to route it to the floor where i had the pan. At least it was on top and to the side of the engine.Long ago, I went 5 years and 25,000 miles in my old FJ40! Had the opportunity to rebuild the engine later and all looked great! Go synthetic oil.
Been using synthetic since the mid '70s! =)
Glad you wrestled that filter off, but what a friggin' pain - I would have been cussing like the entire 7th Fleet! =D
falls to knees, raises fists, yells to sky: "damn you oil filter!" =D
That is exactly the tool I use to get mine off.https://a.co/d/iTPtlrP
This tool or equivalent and this issue you had op will be a thing of the past
I bought it in 2006 to use on my then new civic and has worked on many other vehicles. Definitely worth the $10.That is exactly the tool I use to get mine off.
The oil also lubricates the gasket on install so it doesn't pucker and cause a leak.Ranger Bill - Just posted what caused this to happen if you used normal tightening of the filter when you installed it.

And plenty of room to use a strap. The FJ 40 had the filter mounted with the bottom facing down, no way to remove it without oil leaking out. I put wax paper down to route it to the floor where i had the pan. At least it was on top and to the side of the engine.
I'm going to remove the mousetrap thing too next time, that way I can get to it from below. My last filter was stuck and I accessed it from the top, but that's not easy or convenient. This was like my 5th oc on this truck.
No idea how the filter got on so tight.
Snapped Phillips means I already did the hammer thru the filter and snapped the Phillips while trying to turn the filter.
I got it off I removed that mouse trap oil drain path and that gave me just enough room for another another pair of channel locks. Attached is all the tooling I tried.

You could get that tool that was posted. Turn your wheel and it's out in less then a minute. Then it drains out without making a mess.I'm going to remove the mousetrap thing too next time, that way I can get to it from below. SOBLMFAOSDMFDid you invent any new curse ? words ?? Or at least string some together in an unusual way ? That looks very inspiring for a connoisseur of profanity, such as myself...
