Retired, work is a four letter word.
Last weekend, I decided to climb into the bed using my usual method of grasping the side rail and stepping up onto the rear tire. After shuffling some stuff around, I decided to exit the bed via the tailgate, which was in the fully-upright and latched position. I reached down and unlatched the tailgate. Not wanting it to slam open on the cables (which probably would have survived the impact) I proceeded to lower it gently into the open position. Everything was going well, until a white-hot lightning bolt of pain hit my surgery-needing arthritic shoulder.

So today, I turned-in my Man Card and installed the damper.

Welcome to the Dark Side! At 76 I am just lucky that after 20 yrs in the military and then 20 more as an LEO I still don't have any joint issues, just flat feet :)

Lucky indeed, Jesse - 63 and if it has bone and cartilage, it aches until I get up and get moving. Really looking forward to my 80s. ?

Life as we age becomes such a dilemma. We feel best when we get out of bed and are moving, but moving makes us tired, looking forward to sleep, which bring the soreness, cutting short our rest. These are all good problems nonetheless, far more fair than the alternative.

I have often said that I will never complain about getting old, as I personally know too many friends that never got the opportunity to do so.

Amen to that ! I consider opening my eyes and being able to get up every day a gift and am blessed for that. Sure there are days I'm sore and have a few aches but there are many who can't walk, are bed ridden or worse.

This is so true! We usually walk about 3 miles a day on our days off but between getting the house ready for sale and moving we haven't been out since early March. Well now that we're somewhat settled in Saturday we went to to community center here where they have a 1.25 mile walking trail and we were tired after 2 laps. After we got home we were watching some tv and my thighs were like bricks when I tried getting up and Annie's thighs and calfs were too. lol But once you get moving again the soreness starts to go away and you have to push through it, something I learned from years of playing hockey. Last night we walked around the neighborhood and did 3 miles and while Annie was sore at the end (she has bad knees) I was fine and felt good this morning.

I'm not sure what's scarier her and her bad knees or you saving her pictures.:surprised:?

But she's always falling even way before we ever met. She's tripped on the new carpet at work and was sent to the clinic, fell in a pot hole at Midway Airport and I even think she tripped over the yellow line in the road one time. o_O?

I tripped over the yellow line in the road one time - the cop wasn’t impressed. ???

I’m here all week.

I don't know how old you are, but I have noticed a definite stair step down kind of thing going on when I injure myself, etc. A guy I follow on YouTube is named Dr Attia. His practice I think is centered on longevity and I think he is pretty good with his advice. At 73, I hope I am not yet at what he calls my "marginal decade", but I absolutely understand the concept where the decline is measurable and big setbacks (like a torn rotator cuff) may mean permanent limitations.

The one exception to my observed stair step effect is my hip replacement which I had about 2 years ago. I think it actually made me better than before (knock on wood). Along with zero pain in that hip and strength better than I had before the surgery (about 50 miles a week on mountainous trails a week), they also squared up my back in some way, where the lower back pain that plagued me for the last 30 years is completely gone. So I think the stair step down may not be 100% the aftereffect of a major issue, at least at 73. At 83? We will see.
67, had right knee replaced in January which made a tremendous difference in mobility. My five rotator surgeries were supposed to be only two, but bad surgeons caused two extra on right and one extra on left. I think that caused a lot of the issues with getting strength back. I think once you turn 80 that is when the decline will start to kick in.
