Found Truck Unresponsive and Dead

2022 XLT 302a - Delivered 7/30/2022, 11500 miles:

I drive to work about 3 days a week. 20 miles interstate. Went to lunch and truck drove fine. Left for the day about 4:30 and the truck wouldn't remote start. Ok, maybe out of range. Go out front door and truck is unresponsive. Tried unlocking with FOB, no dice. Had to unlock door manually with key. Truck acted as if there was no battery in it. Tried to turn it over with the key, no response. I closed the door and was ready to call my wife, so I opened the driver's door. after a few seconds a message appeared on the screen. Something like "Start Engine to disable alarm". I can't remember exactly what it said. Anyway, i tried the key in the ignition and she started right up like nothing happened. That was Thursday. I drove it to work today and it was fine coming and going.

Anybody else have something similar happen?

Had similar on my F150. I never did figure it out but out of the blue is just stop acting up.

Drove 600 miles and went to return home next morning and it did the same thing; No crank. Closed doors pulled out key and waited a few minutes and fired right up when I attempted to start the engine.

Extreme heat or cold does weird things to these batteries.

I think you might have a weak battery or a bad ground. Get the battery tested just to be sure.

Seems a decent amount of us have had this happen. Typically a one and done occurrence. Mine happened at the dealership when I picked it up after getting the first oil change. Probably only had around 2-3000 miles on it. Now at 13000 and have not had it reoccur. Mechanics were stumped by it.

The same thing happened to mine about 2 weeks ago, been trying to figure it out as well. (kind of gave up till now). Drove to store after driving to other places as any normal day we have done this for 2 1/2 years with the truck nothing unnormal came outside key fob unresponsive, keypad on door unresponsive, put key in ignition nothing (dead battery? doesn't make since its still new 18,000 miles) pop hood battery is connected (I am not a mechanic I just watch a lot of YouTube & think I know what I am doing). Wait a few minutes load up groceries unsure what to do and continue to try to start truck finally starts! Luckly, I had the keys on me and will not be leaving keys in truck anymore and rely on keypad. Such a strange thing was this a EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack? Going to continue to keep a look out for that old classic Yota without the electronics!

Happened to me at about 500 miles and again at about 1500 miles. 20k miles later, not a damn thing. Weird. So i have no clue what it could be.
But it acted like it had no battery.

I have seen a few posts about this or similar issue.

There is (1) important thing that has to happen in all cases of the posts, that (MAY) be the issue.
More than one owner has had an issue where the truck was dead (nothing) like the battery was disconnected.
Wait 10 minutes or so, then the truck starts, and all is normal.

This little event has me very curious as to what is causing it.

The (1) thing that is a highly likely cause is the PCM Power Relay is sticking.
The relay operates when you do any function to wake the truck up, Door Locks, Remote Start, Open Door.
Now if it sticks or is lazy then after the PCM powers down, the relay relaxes back to open, this would be the 10-minute window. (approx)

The anti-theft system might play a role, and a message relating to it, may just be due to the fact the truck did not see a valid and full PCM wake-up prior to entry, if I am not mistaken even turning the key in the door should do it.

FYI: PCM Power Relay - Is located in the BJB, for future ref, most just disconnect the battery for a fix. But if I am correct and you are stuck with no tools, this would be a highly suspect item to pull and reseat.

What makes this the most annoying (depending on how you look at it) it is a rare event.
the rarity makes it near impossible to pinpoint cause.

This happened to my 2021 after about 3 months of ownership. Hasn't happened since. It's almost like the truck went to sentry mode, and the screen wouldn't turn on when I drove it after either. Once home, (6 mile drive), I turned it off and 5 minutes later it started without any problems.

FYI, I had this happen once a couple years ago - it was really weird and has not happened again since. I haven't replaced either the truck battery or the fob battery either (I have push button start).

Thanks for the clarification - I carry a 10mm wrench in case I need to disconnect the battery for stuff like this - fortunately I've never used it. I'm at almost 4 1/2 years on the original battery and I'm a little nervous about keeping it much longer - I know all the electronics are VERY sensitive to the battery.

Had this happen to me in my 2019 XLT. Drove to a friends house, hung out for a few minutes and went to leave and the doors would not unlock. Unlocked manually and truck was dead. No warning, no odd behavior prior. Checked Battery connections and all seemed good. I walked around a little in disbelief for about 10 minutes, came back and tried the key fob and it worked, truck started right up and drove fine. A few days later it happened again but no recovery this time. Swapped the battery and was back in business.
seems like these batteries just drop out no warning.

I think climate has a lot do with it. Mine was shot last winter and they replaced it under warranty after some protest. They tried to argue 12.1 was a good battery after 50min of driving to get there…

You carry a 10mm? I call BS. It’s not you, Rob - it’s just that it seems so impossible that you’d find it to be able to carry it.
