I've spent a few thousand miles in a Maverick. I missed my Ranger every single one of them.

Couple notes:
- The 10R80 in the Ranger is currently the absolute best truck transmission out there. It's shared with the F-150 Raptor, and is both robust and high tech. Don't believe everything you read on forums.
- The transmission programming in our Rangers is very eco-focussed. Just put it in sport or tow/haul if you want it to be a little more responsive.
- The Maverick is a unibody crossover. You're not really going to get one beyond a simple dirt road. It is not going to hold up to hard use like a body-on-frame pickup.
- AWD =/= 4WD. You're going to want the latter if you have to deal with any winter or dirt.
- The Maverick's bed is incredibly small.
in my experience for most drivers, AWD will do better in snow than 4WD. I love my 4wd Ranger, but the wifes AWD Subaru does better in snow (until the snow is deeper than the frame)

Just curious, what is it he hates about the Ranger transmission other than it's automatic.
He said it shifted too much. Keeping in mind, he only drove it about 1 mile to a shop where he dropped me off to have some work done to a different car of mine. Asked if he wanted to drive it back and he said NO. He loves that it sits up really high (a monster truck he said) and likes literally everything else about it. Constantly calls it a nice truck and all. Just, doesn't like the trans.

With all this in mind, I think he'll be quite happy with his new Maverick.

Learn how stuff on your truck works. I promise you knowledge is empowering.

AWD: in absence of other tech, all power goes to wheel with least traction. Safety aid only.

4wd: locks speed of front and rear axles together. The wheel with the least traction on an axle can only spin as fast as its counterpart on the other axle. Traction is doubled and you are able to make forward progress in slippery conditions.

My dad is elderly at around 75 and will primarily only use the Maverick haul the trash to the local dump.
I'm also 75 and I don't mind the 10 gears. When going down steep grades, I do the +/- and shift to S and a lower gear so I don't have to ride the brake. That works well but I still would rather it be a actual manual transmission.

you crack me up, i totally understand how they work, have owned 4wd trucks for 30 years. Still stand by my statement that the Subaru AWD is better in snow until it reaches frame depth.

yeah, maybe you should learn? The Subaru AWD is Variable Torque Distribution, usually 45:55 (not just a Safety Aid" )

My old Jeep Cherokee Sports laughed out loud when I read this. If you saw half the places I went with those vehicles...

Elderly at around 75! Are you sure he isn't just an "older adult"? :like:
My thoughts exactly! "Elderly?!" Hopefully the OP is fortunate enough to make it to 75... and farther. Bet his attitude changes then.

I still have quite a while before I hit 75. But at the same time it will go fast. But I plan on fighting 75 just like I have every additional year since I hit 40. (For some reason 40 about killed me. 50 and onward? No big deal. Now? I'd give my ass to be "only" 40 again. )

Well "technically" you're a Senior Citizen at age 65 according to the Social Security. But I'd say elderly is a loose term and means different things to different people. If you're in good health an 80 year old would still take offense to this but a 68 year old in bad health might agree.

Heck I'll be 59 next week and luckily am in really great health still. I take no meds and besides a sore back here and there I feel great. I have been getting Senior discounts at restaurants and discounted tickets for the past 4 years. At first it made me feel old but then the Polish kicked in  and I realized I'm saving money.? Now I look for them and take advantage every chance I get.?

Knowledge is empowering, but... Wait until you learn that not all AWD applications are the same. My Subaru had an LSD in the rear (torsen in the front) and you could lock the F/R power distribution.

But, all those shitty, non-4WD rally cars are dumb and not empowered.

At 72 I still have the 27 year old mentality but my body knows better. I totally agree with the Polish part. :like:

Haha, I got carded at our Tuesday at the Terrace ( https://www.mccalllife.com/events/tuesdays-at-the-terrace-summer-concert-series ) outdoor concert last night by a young lady that could be my granddaughter. Yeah, SS is just a few months away.

I know some places have a "We ID Everyone" policy. I guess just covers their butt today because everyone is sue happy. I use to love getting carded in my 30's & 40's as it made you feel young. Now they usually just scan me through and call me Sir.

What was I when I started getting my SS checks at 62? 62 1/2?
Recently had surgery and listening to the people in pre-op run through their litany of health issues my only thought was What in the h*** am I doing here?
67 and spent one other night in the hospital...when I was 4. Going to try not to do it again for at least another 60.
