My dad test drove my 2022 Ranger and absolutely hates the transmission but loves the truck and I love the truck but the transmission makes me very nervous. He has also ordered a 23 Maverick but it hasn't arrived yet. Wondering what the odds are he'll hate the transmission in the Maverick because it's very similar to the one in the ranger? Just curious if anybody has driven both.

Andy @canyonslicker has both a Ranger and a Maverick. Once he sees this he'll be able to give you first hand info on both.

my daily driver is a 21 Ranger STX 4x4, love the truck, no transmission troubles at all. I have also rented Ford Mavericks multiple times for work trips. to me they are completely different vehicles but they both drive well. I use my Ranger as a truck, frequently pulling trailers or heavier bed loads.

Depends on which Maverick he gets. I don't know how comparable the 8 speed is to our 10 speed.

I've spent a few thousand miles in a Maverick. I missed my Ranger every single one of them.

Couple notes:
- The 10R80 in the Ranger is currently the absolute best truck transmission out there. It's shared with the F-150 Raptor, and is both robust and high tech. Don't believe everything you read on forums.
- The transmission programming in our Rangers is very eco-focussed. Just put it in sport or tow/haul if you want it to be a little more responsive.
- The Maverick is a unibody crossover. You're not really going to get one beyond a simple dirt road. It is not going to hold up to hard use like a body-on-frame pickup.
- AWD =/= 4WD. You're going to want the latter if you have to deal with any winter or dirt.
- The Maverick's bed is incredibly small.

I agree about the transmission. I don't get the complaints because I came from a Tacoma.TRD Off Road and that transmission was horrible. I guess it was "reliable", but my Ranger is 1000 times more comfortable, has a much better and responsive powertrain, and I feel it is night and day better than anything I drove before.

All wheel drive does pretty well in snow, but I agree that 4 wheel drive is the way to go for most off roading. My Jeep Renegade and Cherokee did just fine in deep snow and ice. My son's Jeep Compass Trail Hawk does well too. All three are fine for mild off roading.

The only way I'll have an all wheel drive Ford is if I go with the FX4 package. Same goes for Jeeps. While the standard all wheel drive in the Jeep Renegade, Compass, and Cherokee do well, it is definitely worth stepping up for the Trail Hawk package. There really isn't much difference between Ford's FX4 package and Jeep's Trail Hawk package.

I have drove my son's Compass Trail Hawk along with a Ford Maverick FX4. I didn't noice much if any difference in how each did off road.

I am still thinking about a Maverick but it would have to be the Lariat FX4 with factory 4,000 pound tow package if I were to trade the Ranger in for a Maverick.

This is true if you are looking at the 2 wheel drive versions of each. Otherwise the Maverick is all wheel drive and the Ranger is part time 4 wheel drive.

Thanks for the replies. My dad is getting a Lariat 2.0 8sp Maverick and definitely not the CVT offered in the hybrid. His main concern after driving my Ranger was if the Maverick's 8sp was similar, that could be a problem.

In general, he said my truck shifted way too much and his other complaint gets thrown out since it was a gripe about having to use the brakes (he's coming from a Tesla).

Put it this way....I work in the service dept of a Ford dealer (since 1989) and specifically chose the Ranger because of the drivetrain.

I have the hybrid Mav so it’s no comparison because it doesn’t really shift gears.

I drove my daughter's hybrid Maverick. It clicks and clacks loud when you start it (? if that is what you call it) but seemed to drive fine.

When I was looking at Mavericks I drove several of the 2.0 variants, FWD and AWD.

They drove fine and I didn't notice any unusual shifting or hunting.

The Maverick has an 8 speed instead of 10 so there's going to be less skipping around.

The AWD is a MUCH better drive than the FWD simply because the torque from the 2.0 will evaporate the front tires if you try to take off quick.

I liked the interior on the whole, with the only jarring exception being the huge hole in the dash next to the entertainment screen.

It really looks like it was designed for a wider head unit but Ford just decided "Meh..."

I don't tow that often, but most times I have towed it has been over 4k so the Maverick wouldn't have been able to do the job.
