Appreciate insights. Shopping for a 5' bed.

I presume ARE and Snugtop are generally more expensive, but not necessarily leaps and bounds over Leer and Century (same I believe, different brand labels) in the quality department. I'm leaning Leer/Century. Maybe other brands but I'm unfamiliar. I'm in WA State.

I also understand the flush, sexy 'SUV' recessed glass on the sides is actually more leak prone than the classic style with visible gasket trim around the side glass. Thinking going that classic style, not SUV style recessed for that purpose, less leak prone.

Back hatch has me stumped. My uninformed brain says old school style aluminum framed glass might be stronger, less break prone but maybe that's not a problem for the all-glass rear hatch design. All glass certainly looks better. All glass is usually the step up from base models. That's fine, but I want reliable first, looks second.

Single center handle (generally with wires to the outside lock engagements.. maybe dual rods to the outside lock engagements? Don't know!). I close my eyes and see myself annoyed with unlocking and opening two handles every time I want into the back of the truck for daily use. I'm sure two handles on each side are simpler, maybe more reliable, maybe more secure. Would love feed back here.

Windoors. For sure want those. I don't mind two handle action here, which I'd use camping and not everyday.

Hinged/removable front window. How else to clean the back truck cab window? I've heard horror stories of how flimsy the canopy front windows are when they're removable. I don't want that hassle. Maybe blasting soapy water from my pressure water will suffice for that area. For the single utility I foresee - cleaning the cab window - I'd be paying an add on fee for the canopy and possibly be getting a liability along with it. Thoughts?

Carpeted lining? No. I'd rather have the lighter colored raw fiberglass to aid seeing around back there in low light.

Thule or Yakima tracks. Definitely. I want a rack to hold stuff longer than 5' bed. I currently have a Yakima Skybox 12, a long but skinny box that works awesome on my Subaru Outback. I'd probably shop around 'lesser' brands than Yakima/Thule for the actual feet/landing pad and aerodynamic blade-style crossbars. Any suggestion there?

Speaking of 5' bed.. the reason I have a Yakima Skybox 12 is to fit my car camping tent, a Gazelle T4 'instant' tent. The thing is 68" long when packed. If packed in a canopy, it'd need to be propped floor to ceiling if straight down the bed or diagonal, all cattywampus across my other gear. My 'loadout' fits in a Subaru Outback now, I'm sure I could make it work with everything under the canopy but I still want the option of roof rails and my Skybox 12.

Timing. I just ordered my Ranger and waiting on the VIN. No idea when it'll be ready for pickup. Canopy orders take a couple months, too. I'm sure the canopy dealer would be pissed if I ordered too early and it sat there before I even had my truck!

Alu-cab, RSI, etc. These are cool. If Alu-Cab had a more ready option for windows in their windoors (actually, just solid opening side panels, stock), I'd probably go that way. That's a custom order as I understand, upping the price and the turnaround time from across the globe. I'm not spending $4000 on an RSI. They all have similar challenges as their fiberglass counterparts in the dust and water intrusion category. So, I like but can't really get over the cost differential and the minimum daily improved experience. Color choice seems black or gray. I'd pick gray for a little heat reflection, but it'll be mismatched on my Cactus Gray FX4.

So, long read but I'd sure appreciate any reality checks on my presumptions, any guidance appreciated. I'm willing to spend about $3000, but would click my heels like a leprechaun if I get something that looks and works good for less.

Because......? I know its stainless steel, requires assembly, has windoors. From cost to wait times, do you have a sense of why it pencils out over fiberglass brands?

I doubt Jeraco has any dealers in Washington state. Too bad. Very well made fiberglass caps. We sold Leer for one year back in the 80's. Sold Century for a short time also. Been with Jeraco a long time.

What color is your ranger? I have the Leer 100xl. Been thinking about selling the truck.

@21VBRanger I ordered a Cactus Gray Super Crew XLT FX4. Do you like the Leer? Would you choose a different brand or features? Anything disappoint?

I am in Oregon. An ARE or Leer will cost you 3K>3,300.00 The ARE has stronger hinges on the rear flip up and does not have the "button" hardware on the glass. I guess you could say it may be a little better than the Leer/Snug Top. I have had 7-8 Leer's with no issues. I ordered mine last November. The Leer took 4-6 weeks while both local ARE Dealers said it was 4-5 months out. So I went with the Leer. Photos attached here. They screwed up round one and forgot the carpet but made it right with a complete new build. I am very happy with the design/model I selected. The Leer paint work is 100% match and high quality. The full rear glass door IMO is more secure than the metal framed type which I had last time. It fits better, better for water tightness and just seems to seat better.

I think the ARE Overland would look good on your Cactus Grey truck.

It can be colour matched but also has black accent detail of LineX-type material for extra strength. It has options for front windows, flip up side windows, interior finishes and accessories. The rear window with a single t-handle is standard.

@dr3w_mac installed one on his white Ranger and it looks great.

If you don’t need that robust of a canopy, the base model CX Classic is at a decent price point. I have a CX Classic and I’m pleased with it - the fit and finish are great.

@dondonbabyraptor has a CX Classic with the flip up side windows and the tracks on the roof for a roof rack. He seems pleased with his as well.

I do like it overall, a few issues I had with mine were the window moldings on the rear window stuck out and I had to alter them, found on one side glass window the seal is sticking out of the top of the window and there was two spots where there were indentions in the fiberglass and painted over, a few spots with debris in the paint. I detail my cars so for me this was not great at all. They ended up taking 500 off the price of the bed cap. The good was the paint match was perfect and interior was great. This was my second Leer, the first I had no issues.

Thanks for the tag Duke. I quite enjoy mine and in general the ARE's toppers. Love sleeping in the back all the time randomly :)

I'm in the same boat....ordered my Ranger about 3 weeks ago and am now spending MORE money before it even gets here.

I think I'm down to the Leer 100XR or the ARE CX, I might flip a coin....they're both about the same price. I also like the ARE Z2, but it was about $1K more.

I'm with you in that I want reliable first, looks second. I've never looked at a top and thought, "oooh, I love those handles" haha. At first I didn't think I wanted side window access, but I think another poster here talked me into it. Probably the kinda thing you wish you had AFTER you decided against. I think I would also definitely want 1 back handle and not 2.

I'm in MD, so completely opposite side of the country as you, but the Leer guy just told me 2-6 weeks for an order. The ARE guy told me about 12ish weeks for an order.

Just visited a dealer, Kanopy Kingdom in Milton, WA. Snugtop Rebel base price same as Century/Leer for equivalent shell, $2500. That surprised me. Snugtop has double gasket compared to single with Century. Snugtop’s opening front window has a true lower hinge where Century just pops out. Otherwise they seem very comparable. Windoors on Snugtop were $175 per vs $195 from Century/Leer. Forgot to ask about Yakima/Thule roof tracks.

Said Century delivery time 3-4 weeks out, Snugtop 2 months. I ordered my Ranger last week, no VIN yet so I’d time my canopy order accordingly. Leaning Snugtop now for the hinged front window alone, seems less likely to fall out as I’ve read has happened to others.
