Why do you back in when parking?

Our Hyundai Santa-Fe has a multi-view four camera system which provides an "overhead" view. I thought this would be a gimmick, but it actually works well. Especially for centering between the lines. Side mirrors can also be set to automagically tilt down while in reverse. Great for checking lines and curb distances.

yes, even the best trim available in the 2019 was a bit sparse compared to options available in other vehicles. that's one of the ones I missed the most (but not enough to want to be in an F150).

Other than needing to make a quick get-away. Why would you back in when parking?

Front wheels turn, back don't. You get much more precision turn and can park the car more accurately and smaller places. Same reason why you park combine harvester front first and why forklifts and all have rear wheel steering.

I don't. Got that big step or a ball mount in the hitch all the time that protects the back and keeps walkers out a bit if they are smart. Front is protected by a curb that stops stray carts.

I drove tractor-trailers, and a literal “farm” tractor pulling bomb trailers in the Air Force. I was trained how to properly use mirrors to back into parking spots; have backed in ever since. While test driving a new Ranger back in the 80’s, I backed the truck into the dealers lot using the mirrors. The salesman said, “Wow!”

Yeah I've seen that a few times too but the worst is the in handicap spots. Too many times I've seen lazy inconsiderate a'holes parking in them with no handicap tags/plates and get out walking perfectly fine. That's one of my biggest pet peeves about parking lots because there are many who really need these spots and some lots have little of them.

Back when I was gainfully employed. There was a guy came in one day pissed that he forgot to put his handicap pass on his rear view mirror. The company had his car towed. Told us he had to walk the 2 1/2 miles home. WHAT? You can walk 2 1/2 miles home and you have a handicap pass.

When I messed up my left leg, like spun my left foot around 270 degrees messed up, I had the temporary handicap placard.

It was rare when someone didn't complain about us being there.

My wife got out first to prepare for getting me out and of course she wasn't handicapped at all.

They usually acquiesced when they saw me in a cast from my hip to my toes.

An officer even approached my wife sitting in the car once.

"My husband is inside in a wheelchair if you want to wait and talk to him.".

"Oh. So sorry. Have a nice day"

Regrettably, jerks abuse the spaces and it makes everyone suspect, even those who really need it.

A good friend has an artificial leg and many days can walk pretty good with only a mild limp.

He says he often pulls his pants leg up slightly so people can see his metal leg to avoid getting quizzed about why he's in the handicap space.

Well if you saw me park in one you'd probably think I'm an asshole that is abusing the system! But what your observation doesn't see is the 60% lung capacity and the 6 inches of titanium rods and cages in my back and the inability to walk any distance and impossible to stand in a line. So just keep judging people because YOU THINK they look healthy!

Just this morning there was some lady parked in a HC spot and a perfectly healthy individual got out and went inside. Not sure how to process that. I guess it's perfectly legal. But you always see interesting things at Wal-Mart. I only go there first thing in the morning if I need one or two things.

Backing the truck into a dealers lot is a great idea...you can get out of there quickly when the finance guy puts the pressure on...

I backed into a parking spot always, when I drove semi and still do with my Ranger. In a semi, you are completely blind to the area immediately behind the trailer or the cab if bobtailing. The clear view of the rear is about 50 ft out. You can't see pedestrians or forklifts or anything else in your path. I still prefer to back into a parking spot with the Ranger for the same reasons; much better view of the situation.

In some cases, the person parking in a handicap spot is a caregiver or family member who drives the actual handicapped person(s), so they may well be "dis-disabled (thanx, W)." They are supposed to have a Handicap license plate or a hang tag on the rearview mirror. If you see a vehicle in a Hcap spot without ID, inform the mgmt to report the vehicle's lic plate so that the vehicle owner is fined. Fines vary by state, but Wisconsin it's $150 minimum up to $300, MN is $100-200.

I think there are codes concerning how many parking spots must be designated as handicap accessible in a given lot, but I'm too lazy to Google ADA regs.
