Why do you back in when parking?

For my purposes the driver who parks at handicapped spot can be pink elefant walking with front legs and farting marshmellows as long as there's a tag in the car.

There's more qualified people to make that tag decision anyway.

In some cases, the person parking in a handicap spot is a caregiver or family member who drives the actual handicapped person(s), so they may well be "dis-disabled (thanx, W)." They are supposed to have a Handicap license plate or a hang tag on the rearview mirror. If you see a vehicle in a Hcap spot without ID, inform the mgmt to report the vehicle's lic plate so that the vehicle owner is fined. Fines vary by state, but Wisconsin it's $150 minimum up to $300, MN is $100-200.

I think there are codes concerning how many parking spots must be designated as handicap accessible in a given lot, but I'm too lazy to Google ADA regs.

I know not all disabilities are easily to see so I wasn't judging on that. My gripe are those who park there with no tag/plates then get out and strut inside like they're someone special. But many in today's society think they are and are a special kind of stupid.

It was 17* here yesterday morning and we went to Sams Club. We got there when they opened and the lot wasn't too crowded and I still parked way out in the back of the lot and I did the same in AZ even when to was 112*. Until the day I can't physically do it that's how I've always parked regardless of the weather. Sadly I see way too many who could use the exercise (and a few extra steps) all circling for a closer spot.

One of our neighbors has a disabled placard. Her disability? Bi-polar! How that prevents her from walking is beyond me. Illegitimate parking spot use always makes me think of my cousin, whom was born with MS, and has spent his whole life in a wheelchair. It wouldn't be fair to him.

There are times that I drop my wife off and then pick her up. I'll park her car in a handicap spot, with placard, when I pick her up and walk in to accompany her back to her car.

I'm not disabled (well, that's debatable!), so I've gotten the stink eye strolling out of her car. But she needs it close to get back in (she has a bum leg from cancer).

On a side note, her placard lets her turn any metered municipal parking spot in a handicapped space with no need to feed the meter.

But ... she'd rather have the ability to walk without pain over getting close or free parking.

In Va. and Oh. the tags clearly state not to drive with it hanging from the rear view. But I see people doing it all the time! When my mom had one, she only hung it up when parked. When I had one after my motorcycle accident, I only hung it up when parked.

Here's scummy user example of abuse. In my town of 20,000 we have two parking garages. That makes nice parking in the winter for downtown errands. One lady parked free, for seven (7!!!) years in one of the few handicap spaces.

Turned out, she was not disabled and had both a placard and tag for 2 different cars!

She now has a felony!

My wife has them also for her severe back problems. Some days are better then others but walking is painful. I always go find a carriage she can hold onto for stability after parking. Doctor recommended her getting it and had to fill out paperwork for our town to issue them. Has to be reviewed every couple years. I will admit I used it at home depot a couple times when I tore a ligament in my leg by being stupid.

I've always backed in for the same reasons everyone else here says. It's easier to leave, better visibility, and after my tail lights got stolen I try to find a wall or pole to help stop the tailgate getting opened.

When I messed up my left leg, like spun my left foot around 270 degrees messed up, I had the temporary handicap placard.

It was rare when someone didn't complain about us being there.

My wife got out first to prepare for getting me out and of course she wasn't handicapped at all.

They usually acquiesced when they saw me in a cast from my hip to my toes.

An officer even approached my wife sitting in the car once.

"My husband is inside in a wheelchair if you want to wait and talk to him.".

"Oh. So sorry. Have a nice day"

Regrettably, jerks abuse the spaces and it makes everyone suspect, even those who really need it.

A good friend has an artificial leg and many days can walk pretty good with only a mild limp.

He says he often pulls his pants leg up slightly so people can see his metal leg to avoid getting quizzed about why he's in the handicap space.

That’s true. Things are not always what they seem. Some people look perfectly fine, but may suffer from heart failure or COPD which can prevent them from walking long distances.
Sometimes we can be too quick to judge.

Other than needing to make a quick get-away. Why would you back in when parking?

My brother-in-law is in law enforcement and he always backs in. Presumably to get out faster, if needed.

I used to back in all-of-the-time. Then I realized; If I back in, this leaves the front exposed (hate it when that happens) and if I get hit, they're most likely going to mangle the front of my Ranger, which, I believe, is more costly to repair.

Don't get me wrong - I still park far away and/or next to a median in the parking lot (to at least save one side from door dings). I'd bubble wrap my Blue Bullet if that was feasible.

Just a question I was pondering.?

Backing in to park has been shown to reduce accidents and deaths.

When you drive past the spot, you can see if it is clear or not, anything / people who might be soon to walk into or across it. Then, back in.

When you drive out, you don't have to spin your head like an owl to see that your path is clear.

Pulling in forward means safe parking job as you can see if your path is clear, but backing out means you can run over little Johnny's head, killing him. He rode his tricycle into your path but you didn't see him, because looking backward out the rear window a while turning your head like an owl does not afford the best and safest perspective while driving. That is why in vehicles, the driver faces forward.

He left just enough space between him and myself that if anyone pulled in between us he couldn't get out without nailing them. No door-bangers to contend with... You guys have convinced me that backing in is best...but one problem... I'm a very crooked parker and this could make things worse...

Kudos to the F150 driver. But he could have pulled closer to where the Ranger parked, not allowing anyone in front of him. Anyone who parked behind him would be of no consequence. As he parked, he let himself open to being parked in.
