In my younger days, in the 70's, I'd back in, so if car didn't start, it was easier to pop start it, going forward.
Haven't owned a stick for almost 20 years now. I back in, as I feel it is safer to do so, vs when I leave. I like being able to leave, stress free. After 16+ years of marriage, my wife now joins in to tell me "there's a pull through". No backing needed. Other times, she just doesn't get it.
She never backs in.

Pull through in a parking lot or the angled end spot are the preferred, backing in is second.
A pull through next to the dead end of the cart return!!!!

Other than needing to make a quick get-away. Why would you back in when parking?

My brother-in-law is in law enforcement and he always backs in. Presumably to get out faster, if needed.

I used to back in all-of-the-time. Then I realized; If I back in, this leaves the front exposed (hate it when that happens) and if I get hit, they're most likely going to mangle the front of my Ranger, which, I believe, is more costly to repair.

Don't get me wrong - I still park far away and/or next to a median in the parking lot (to at least save one side from door dings). I'd bubble wrap my Blue Bullet if that was feasible.

Just a question I was pondering. ?
I think it’s easier to back in if parking spaces are tight.
It’s easier to pull straight out when leaving and you have a better view of other cars and people.
As you said, it’s faster to pull straight out if you need to gtfo in an emergency.
As another user stated, snow makes it harder to back out.
If you need to jump your battery or someone else’s, it’s easier having the front of the truck facing out.
If your truck needs to get towed, it’s easier to load it on a flatbed if you’re backed in.

The only downside to backing in is when someone in the parking spot behind you pulls too far forward and you can’t drop your tailgate… This really hasn’t been an issue for me though. Usually stuff we’re buying at the store goes in the back seat, unless it’s something big. In that case, I plan ahead and find a parking spot where someone can’t pull in behind me.

I back into the garage because of the backup camera I can gage the wall even though I have hit it a couple of times already (getting pretty good at matching drywall texture in the dining room) :)

I figure a few more bumps and I will be able to get an F150 in the garage

I got a cheap chock block at Harbor Freight. Line up the line on the camera with it ((tight on the sides too) and back up until the tire hits it. Permanent market on the floor so I know it is always in the right place.

She never backs in.
Been with mine 25+ years, and she had a learner's permit for 19 of those years. By the time she finally decided to "get 'er done", that first permit was old enough to buy her a beer. She even asked her instructor once if they could focus more on backing into a spot, because she knows that's what I prefer. The instructor took one look at the Ranger, looked at their little training car (some kind of Toyota hatchback, but I don't remember what) and told her "Learning to back in my car isn't going to help you with that big 'ole truck!"

We practiced in the local park's parking lot with the Ranger and a couple of pieces of wood to represent the edges of other cars (i.e. if she rolled over them, it was a fender-bender), with me taking videos so that she could see how she was doing, and now she's fine backing it in. She's also under 5'2", so she has a little more trouble with seeing around the truck than I do.

#1- Many years ago I was hit by a new driver while I was backing from a parking space, pretty sure she panicked and punched the gas instead of the brakes...pushed my F150 about 1.5 ft! Have backed in ever since!

#2- I generally feel trucks turn sharper in reverse, most times it's easier to back in vs pulling in forwards.

#3- I feel much safer pulling out forward, even with the fancy back up cameras, I still like to see first hand what I'm pulling out into!

#4- Have you seen/notice how some people drive through a parking lot! JEBUS CROMBY!!!

#2 Forklifts have the steer wheels at the back for a reason.
