Almost always under 1/8 of a tank. Single digit miles left on the calculated range a fair bit.
I had the 50 mile warning come on on the interstate once and calculated whether I could go a couple more exits or not. Estimated I if I went a little further I should have about 3 miles left on the range; when I pulled off the highway it was at 1.

I know this has been brought up in other mpg threads but I don't think we've ever had one dedicated to this. I usually fill up when a 1/4 tank is left but with gas being so high now I've been filling up right around the 1/2 way mark. It's just a little less painful even though you're spending the same amount in the end. I had an ex who'd run it down to fumes!

So are you conservative and fill up early or adventurous and live on the edge??

I do the same 1/2 way mark

Depends. If I'm overlanding in the middle of nowhere and am unsure where the nearest gas is I'll fill up like a madman...sometimes when I'm down only a quarter tank. I do have a 16 gallon spare in the back for those "oops" moments, though.

Around town I'll wait until she chimes that I've got 50 miles left.

I usually fill my tank when it falls below 1/2 and almost always with “premium“ (93 octane). Living and driving in a generally humid area means I reduce the amount of air inside the tank, trying to minimize the amount of moisture condensation inside. I select a station with moderate-to-busy business, increasing the likelihood of buying fresh premium.

So I had a little disappointment with my first fill up. The trip computer said I was at 24.6 MPG. The combination of mountain highway miles and in town was split 66% highway to 33% in town almost exactly. When it kicked off my calculator says 21.4 MPG. :(.

I think I am going to ignore the miles left in the tank display. :)

I cant remember if we had this conversation already (maybe it was another OCD member lol) but you can adjust your fuel readout with the link below. It will take a few tanks full to correct itself and I started at 944.

I do usually fill up when the truck tells me 50 miles to empty. With my Chevron card and Albertsons/Safeway I get multiples of .10 off per gallon for shopping. I got $1.00/gallon last month (that was so awesome) and just this morning got .50/gallon off. It was still $80.00 OUCH.

I'm not a heavy commuter anymore so really if I have to fill up it's been weeks since the last tank - but that said, I'm that guy who waits for my Ford products to yell at me that there's 50 miles to empty estimated. Probably shouldn't do that but I also track my fuel records. (Nerd stuff, not necessarily for anything else.)

Not to brag, but…. I decided this thread was a challenge.
