The evidence suggests that the 10R80 isn't made to last. I am sure that Ford knows how to make a reliable 10R80, they simply chose not to.
Then why did they put it in so many different vehicles?

For the exact same reason(s) that they are in "warranty hell" right now. They are losing billions to warranty issues.

So glad my unit has the 6R80 unit (ZF6HP built under licence). Seems that a Ford licensed copy of a ZF box is way better their own iteration of something. Sad how far they have fallen since the mighty C4, C6 days.
Maybe Ford should have simply licensed the ZF 8 speed if they wanted more ratios, as it seems to be quite a good unit. Most of the Chinese built units coming in to Aus to use it - probably because ZF has a factory in China, but the trans is the one thing about these units that no one seems to bitch about. (Chinese utes - well some of them anyway, seem to have a bit of a bad name for rust and electrical gremlins over here)

I'm in the same boat.

Had mine repaired under the TSB (valve body and CDF) about 30k miles ago - truck had 34k. I'm now about 65k (warranty good till 75K) and the same nonsense is back.

I just haven't made the call yet....gonna wait another couple thousand miles until I need an oil change and tackle it then. Gonna dig out my paperwork in the meantime.

Clunky downshifts...hesitation/sputtering when first driving off....have had a few throttle delays at intersections. It was fine for about 20-25k miles and then it came back.

These transmissions SUCK.

What extended warranty did you get? What level? Years? Miles?

I already have the Premium 8 year/125k warranty but would love to get more time added on to that.!
Premium Care for 3 year/36k miles. It's something at least.

@Awwphooey I contact Ford Motor Company directly. The dealership said they couldn't do anything on their end and recommend I call. 866-631-3788 is the number they gave me.

Also there’s been a good bit of discussion on the web about a permanent fix for the 10speed. Check out or look up, NextGen Drivetrain. There’s a couple YouTube videos out there of the dude explaining the issues and fixes.

Just for anyone who wants to upgrade or keep their Ranger for longer mileages.

You really have the golden unicorns down there. Not only do you have oil burners and manuals, you have good automatics too? Ford the American company hates us anymore, and loves you guys. Even had the Barra. If I were to move strictly for vehicle choice, I know where it would be.

I read of a fellow that had 4 transmissions replaced in 80K miles. He had the extended warranty.

My Advice

Purchase and install a FitzStick dipstick. Then suck out the transmission fluid through the dipstick tube, and add the exact amount of clean fluid with LubeGard Platinum additive. My transmission was severely misbehaving from 5K to 18K. Did what I just suggested and at 26K all is still fine. I change the fluid as soon as I sense the transmission starting to act up or at 20K mile intervals.
Does this install void the warranty?

Hello - So May of 2 years ago, my 2019 had a complete transmission rebuild at ~34K, posted here:

https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/transmission-repair-work-order.25518/

Now, just about exactly 2 years later at ~53K, transmission is once again starting to hitch going into second, exactly what it started doing prior to eventually going to sh*t and getting rebuilt in 2023.

I know I'm under warranty until 60K. Has anyone here gone through multiple iterations of transmission failure under warranty? What eventually happens? Does Ford just continue to repair it until you're out of warranty and then you're S-O-L?

Is this where you start to look for a class action lawsuit to join? So frustrated.

Would love to get some input on this, thanks in advance folks.

I've attached the original repair order redacted, if interested.
Mine failed at 59640. They have made some changes on the 10R80 after 2022. They ordered one out of the Memphis Dist center for mine and it should have the updated components in it.

We’re all fine.
In all seriousness. It’s pretty much all about your CDF bushing and if it stays in place. If it doesn’t move then you’re in good shape. If it moves a little then you may have some quirky shifts. If it keeps moving , well then may the force be with you. The fact that Ford has a specific TSB now that directly addresses the CDF issue and has developed a test procedure to detect suspect transmissions speaks volumes for me. I was fortunate to have my 2022 replaced with an updated under warranty at around 18000 miles. My issues were subtle delayed shifts mostly in the 3-5 gear range. Most people would have kept driving it. Make of it what you will.

He does impress.

I believe that he stated the CDF bushing slips due to extreme/excessive heat.... and they offer a fix for it. It is a poor design for several reasons, friction fit vs captured, high fluid temps from poorly implemented torque converter causing the high temps, etc. He had a long laundry list of trash (under performing) parts.

Bottom line: I think Ford took the design specs, and individually marginalized parts so much that the final product became the sum of the defects.

Death by a thousand cuts. A transmission not built to last.

Maybe Ford and GM should take note of what he is saying. Nevermind that would mean they would have to admit they made a mistake and actually fix it right.

Supposedly, transmissions built after 2022 have the updated sleeve/bushing and some other changes.

Mine was just replaced last week with a different transmission with updated components at 59640 miles. Shifts better than it ever has, if only the dealer would have put the splash pads back on on both sides of the wheels wells instead of tossing them (now in a fight), all would have been good.
