While I am a fan of the Army (did my 3 yr), in many cases/fields it isn't kind to knees. I've known a few retired soldiers with worn out knees.

Hey there. So i have a 23 rangler xlt 2wd with 21k miles. When I bought it the transmission was a little rough. Lugging at certain times and just not always smooth, but I read it was normal so didnt think much of it. Over a few months the transmission issues were getting worse. I finally had the time off to take it in and leave it for a few days. It was lugging in slow speeds in residential areas, when going up hill and random times for some reason it just wanted a higher gear than it probably should have been in and hard shifting when cold.

Luckily they gave me a rental for free after 5 days.

Ford did a transmission reset and new valve body. I just got it back after a month in the dealership and have put 150 miles on it so far. The transmission is soooo much smoother now. Better than when I bought it new. I dont even notice it changing gears now. The paperwork stated a solenoid had some scoring and a couple of them failed a "gravity test" (whatever thay is). I know its still in the learning phase but i hope it stays this way. Its way better. I wonder if it also had low transmission fluid from the factory also.

Driving in tow or sport mode eliminates the 'lugging', and I was under the impression that the '23 models got the updated trans.

Has anybody replaced more than one transmission in their Ranger? I have a ā€˜21 XLT that just had a tranny replacement 3 weeks and 1500 miles ago, but it doesn’t seem like much changed in how it runs. The downshift clunking stop, but there’s still some coasting and bouncing. Best way to describe it is that it feels like I’m driving a manual and I’m not very good at it.
Upside is that the new one is covered for 12k or 12 months after install date so I have time for it to self destruct again.

Is it a ā€œnewā€ transmission or a rebuilt or new to you but used? Dealer installed?

I was told by the service manager at the dealer that it was a brand new transmission from Ford, but the whole process took about 3 months as they kept rescheduling for back ordered parts and technician days off.
Went for a drive last night and watched the gears - Is it common for the truck to skip 2nd every single time when accelerating? Also skipped 4th a few times.

did you investigate the bucking/surging thread? see here: https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/threads/bucking-surging-epidemic.14581/

it's like a $60-90 replacement part (used to be less than $30...) and takes less than 15 minutes to swap in your driveway yourself as the sensor is on the top of the engine, essentially. i had to do this myself and prior to swapping the part i could agree the symptoms felt like a bad stick shift driver at times (source: i used to drive manual transmissions and i miss it).

good luck!

Yes it’s normal to skip gears. What they told you and whats on the repair order could be two different things. Do you have a copy of the repair order? Either way IF it’s transmission related you should take it back to get it straightened out.

Common in Drive mode. Try Tow-Haul mode to hit every gear.

For those that have had the transmission replaced - Once all the parts were in and you dropped the truck off, how long did it take for install? Didn’t think anything of it when I picked the truck up, but I dropped off around 8am and got a call before 2pm that it was ready. I know these aren’t big trucks and the tech is experienced, but less than 6 hours with a 1 hour lunch break seems very fast.
8k on the new transmission and it’s finally going back in this week after all the previous issues came back 6k ago.
