So my 2020 Ranger was coming up to 32,000km ( About 20,000 miles) and I decided to follow the Canadian service manual which said to change the transmission fluid. I took it to my near by Ford Dealer on a Thursday. Got the truck back on Friday. It sat in the driveway until Sunday. That Sunday I had a 100 mile trip to do. On the major hiway the Transmission stated shifting down to 5 th gear then back up to 9 th gear . I was doing about 70 miles/hr. I slowed to 60 Mile/hr and it seamed to settle dow. But occasionally it would randomly shift from 9 th gear to 5th gear and back again.
on Monday I brought the truck to a different Ford dealer. They did a diagnostic OBD reading and came up with 50 different codes. They could not fix it for 2 weeks.. Having extended warranty on this truck, I drove it for 300 miles subsequently and the transmission worked ok. Just misbehaving once the whole trip.
After the two weeks of flawless driving I took it back to the dealer and picked it up the next day. Originally from the diagnostic they were going to do an extensive service to the trany . As it turned out there was a bulletin from Frord that said replace the firmware to the Transmission control unit. So that’s all they did. Now at 42,000 km ( 26,000 Miles ) the transmission is actually working better than before. Before the transmission was slow to gear down on a hill at around 60 to 70 km/hr ( 37 to 43 miles/hr) now it switches just as the engine starts to labour. FYI

I have heard of others that had transmission shifting erratically that was fixed by software upgrade.
In your case it seems odd the problem occurred after a trans service.

Can you share the TSB number?

TSB 24-2101 10R80 Automatic Transmission – Harsh/Delayed Engagement And/Or Harsh/Delayed Shift – Non-Main Control Break-In Capable. Didn't really notice much difference in my '19 but it might help!

Also had this one done:
TSB: 19-2052 - 2019 Ranger - Engine Cold Start Runs Rough / Rough Shifting Transmission

I’m at 81k miles and just started having some of the issues others have described, particularly when shifting from first to second to third—jolts, etc. I don’t have the extended warranty, have read a couple of the other forums on this topic, and am not excited about a $6k to $7k new transmission and a 6 to 10 week repair, but my gut tells me that’s inevitable.

Any advice for me on how best to diagnose the problem (maybe it is something simple?), find the best mechanic to attend to it (I’m happy with my mechanic but is there any reason to go to a dealer?), and get whatever dollars might be available from Ford to offset the repair (what are these TSB things?)?

TSB ‘s ( technical service bulletin) are for vehicles still under warranty. There will be no $ from Ford if you’re out of warranty. Fluid change and using Lubeguard additive may help but if you have mechanical issues ( CDF drum failure) then you’re probably looking at replacing the transmission.

Since you are out of warranty, find a reputable transmission specialist, not a jack of all trades mechanic. They can rebuild your trans or swap in one that's rebuilt for less than Ford, and quicker.

Good advice. That is my plan if I ever need it (knock on wood).

If the OP’s truck is a 4x4 they will not find a better price than a new Ford transmission with the updates. Currently in the $2400-$2600 range online. ( part # KB3Z7000B)

Can my regular mechanic tell much from a "diagnostic"? I asked them about changing my fluid and adding lubegard, and they suggested a diagnostic first.

I'm not really laughing at you, brother. But it did make me smile at the way you phrased your response.
