I see lots of threads about people getting their transmissions rebuilt/replaced for various reasons. One thing I do not see clearly indicated is are all of these replacements on stock configurations or after a tune?

Thought this topic would be helpful for those on the fence like me to tune their truck.

Note: I am not implying a tune will create and issue or one tune is safer over another. More curious of real life experience from those who have had major transmission issues.

My truck is stock tuned. The only thing that changed is during the latter part of Fall last year. I switched from 87 octane to running 89 octane in it.

I’ve heard stories of dealerships denying warranty repairs on transmissions because of tunes that were done. Like I’ve said many times, dealerships will use any and every excuse to blame the customer and get out of eating repair costs for a vehicle.
Even though the 10r80 transmissions on 5g rangers are known to have problems, they’ll still blame the customer rather than acknowledge their product is faulty. If your truck isn’t completely 100% bare-bones stock, you can pretty much bet they’ll deny your warranty claim and you’ll be paying out of pocket. I absolutely HATE dealerships…

Mine was stock when the transmission failed.

It was rebuilt at 36k though I was having issues as early as 23k.

WAY too many trips to the dealer with No Problem Found results.

It is theorized that a tuned vehicle will have better luck with the transmission due to better shifting logic.

The stock Ford logic is pretty terrible, trying to get into a high gear ASAP to maximize MPG while lugging the engine.

Right now my truck has the Livernois 87-89 tune on it and the shifting is MUCH better.

I didn't add the tune to up performance.

I added it for 2 reasons:

1. Transmission shifting

2. Remove the ASS BS.

There's been a few on here who were tuned (I can't think of who right now but hopefully they'll see this) and they had no trouble getting their transmission and other warranty work done. I think the biggest thing is to have a good relationship with your service manager before things happen.

When I had my '19 I asked my service manager (Justin at Peoria Ford) about this and he could've cared less it was tuned and told me not to worry because they wouldn't have said anything IF something were to happen. Now saying this and actually do it is two different things but you have to hope they'll have your back. I asked him about flashing it back to stock for routing maintenance and he said there's no reason to unless they're doing updates, He moved up in the company and the new service manager was a jerk so I never went back there and starting using a different dealer, Sanderson Ford. He basically told me the same thing but then it got totaled so it didn't matter anyways. lol

I got the Ford tune just after new and 6 years later I'm coming up on 90k, zero concerns

Maybe we should start a new poll.
“ How many of you totaled your truck after installing a tune?”

Okay, it seems I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking did anyone leave the tune when in the shop for a rebuild or replacement.

I tuned my truck at the 1000mile mark. Drove great up till around 110k is when the transmission first acted up. Then 115k is when I gained 4 neutrals

Had a 19 Ranger. Installed tune from Unleashed around 5k. Had transmission rebuilt at 114k. Symptoms were very very slight torque converter slipping on slow acceleration. Left tune installed. Took to dealer, they said they can replace the TC or tear it down to look for other issues. They felt replacing converter would be a temporary fix. . I told them to tear it down. They found some burnt discs and took pics and sent to Ford. Ford approved a full rebuild. I had ford extended warranty with $200 deductible. Never questioned the tune. I dice traded it in on a RR.

I have wondered a lot about a tune extending transmission life. I tuned my 2020 Ranger at 5k miles. I use the livernois Tow/Haul tune 90% of the time. I’m currently at 106k miles. So far I have had no transmission issues or really any issues. I tow my boat frequently year around. I made 2 trips towing it to Florida. At around 80-85k miles I serviced the transmission myself and added LubeGuard Platinum. Hopefully it has no issues in the future. But I would lie if I said a transmission failure in the future is not on my mind lol.
