Corporate drone. Dilbert's world is alive & well.
If they wanted more ratios Ford should have just licensed the ZF 8 speed like they did with the 6R80 which seems to be a more reliable box all round. I don't think Ford has designed a decent auto since the C6. We have a number of Chinese manufacturers dumping pickups into the market here and they all use a variant of the ZF 8 speed, because ZF has plants in China, and they can brag about their German (built under license) auto gearboxes. But to be fair most owner reports are they are silky smooth, very reliable boxes. Obviously ZF keeps close watch over QC in it's Chinese plants.
Keeping tabs on QC in a Chinese factory has got to be worse than herding cats.

my transmission has been doing ok for a while now until last night. really awkward shift from 3 to 4. it felt like the truck wanted third but got fourth and then downshifted third all in one awkward moment... my reaction was oh snap here goes my transmission... but it seems fine today.

Yeah, the occasional weird shift is annoying. On the gas, off the gas, on the gas and the transmission is confused. Worst for me is changing to sport mode when coming to a stop so I can have extra acceleration pulling into traffic.

And all that engineering was done on a Slide Rule. No calculators, and computers were massive and SLOW.

Yep...now I am afraid to be afraid lol...if I soft-pedal it will it freak out? If I hammer it will it freak out? If I look at the gear shift will it freak out. If I don't treat it the exact way it wants will it freak out and start spitting fluid and parts at me again lol

I figure to hell with it. I'm driving it the way I have to here in Houston traffic - I can't be timid around here otherwise I might get into a running gun-battle.

That's what I do. Just live with it as a nature of the beast.

Yep, a lot of 'professionals' from mechanics to health care will inflate the price when they know insurance will be paying.
And that should be 100% illegal in any profession. Fleecing of insurance like that is the reason rates are going up all the time. I remember when my wife and I were dating and she went to the doctor's office and they bill was $x, then they learned that she didn't have insurance, grew out of policy with her parents, and the bill was all the sudden about half of what they initially stated. I get that filing and following up with insurance claims adds some work, but the difference from the initial bill to the actual was way more than that processing time/fee should be. And the whole requirement to have medical now, just makes it so those professionals don't feel the need to do a cash price anymore since everyone should have insurance and by not offering the cash price, you'll be more inclined to sign up for it.

Sarcasm incoming. The only way to live in peace with this transmission is to state "It's a truck, not a sedan" 3x times fast when you start it and never, ever, think about the shifting strategy at all. They call it a strategy so that makes it seem intentional. To me it feels intentionally drunk, but it hasn't stranded me yet! lol

Seriously though, the less I think about it or try to analyze each bump or shift, the more I feel it actually might be just fine. I'll check back in 5 years when I hit 95K

SO...I am curious...what would the chances be that I could have the same issue occurring with a different transmission? The adaptive shift smoothed out with no issues. Then today in traffic I accelerated and had a super hard shift and was holding at 9th gear when it should have gone into 10th. Also the crazy RPM swings that I was seeing on our trip to Florida.

This was touted as a Motorcraft transmission. And it is under warranty. I am going to drive it a bit close to the house this weekend to see what is happening. I do have an OBDLink EX and was going to try to do some data logging if I can figure it out. I haven't played with it nearly enough as I should have so if someone has any clues for me on if I can monitor pressures or some kind of parameters.

I am really not a happy camper right now. :(

I'd take it in right away...those super hard shifts are sending sledge hammer shockwaves through your drive line and everything in/on the engine...

Plus side...the meeces have all abandoned ship...

What part number did they bill for the transmission? Im pretty sure that the transmission replacements under warranty are new units and not remans. One would think that if it’s a Motorcraft reman it would have the updated goods in it .

Part of this is PTSD. Once you have been through the transmission loss, you become very conscious of every move you make, and every shift that is the slightest different. I lost mine at 90k, or at least pulled it before it threw any codes, but was starting to shift hard, and even got stuck in 7th gear at a stop light and would not engage.

I ordered one off eBay from a junked truck with only 5k on it. Two weekends of my time in the driveway, the trans it self, freight and a bunch of trans fluid cost me under $1500 to swap it out. I've put about 3-4k on it with no issues. I'll do trans fluid changes every 30k now I figure. I have the PPE pan and dip stick now as well.

I am hoping that is the case however there is one thing I forgot to add :(

I noticed some splatter on my tailgate and that telltale smell. If it were leftover fluid it would have been smelling up much sooner. :(

JUST got back from dropping it off at the shop. Told them, in vivid, gory detail, of what occurred.

As a side note - this was supposed to have been an "awesome" vacation for my wife and I. The transmission first then my sister is now ill and the cleaning ladies left our front door open and let out our cat on Wed and is still missing. :(

D
If your cat never had to hunt for a meal before, it'll be back when it gets hungry enough. If your cat is fixed, sooner. If it's not fixed, a little longer. Just listen for the crying outside the door. When kitty comes home, it's bath and flee check time. If you find flees, consider a bath with Dawn dish washing liquid. (the blue one)

He came back, got a flea dip and a vet visit. :)

So one question on the transmission...is it possible it was overfilled by the shop? Would it have taken that long to puke? Secondly would the overfull state have caused the slam shift event?
