Old 81 Dodge with the slant six. Couldn’t wear it out. Paid $1000 dollars for it, drove the crap out of it for 14 years, sold it for $1000. 😁

Now THAT is what I call a good deal! In 14 years, you had zero depreciation!

I tell you what - those straight 6s are really hard to kill. My son had a 300 straight six in his F-100 and it had over 200k on it, and it ran like a top. He drained the oil out of it once when he had it parked in my shop (which I didn't know at the time). I needed to move it so I started it up, moved it and it didn't complain at all. He ended up pulling the motor and checking the main and rod bearings - they didn't seem to have any damage from it at all. That was one hell of a motor - and torque for days!

Brother had that 300 in the F150. He was always shifting gears. I said this engine is a torque monster, put it in high gear and let it eat. He wishes he never sold it now. Super dependable, virtually no maintenance, and last for years and years. That’s why they quit making those in line six engines, they lasted to long. My son had an XJ with the 4.0 and the only thing that engine ever knew was right foot to the mat. He sold it with 242,000 miles on it and it didn’t even use oil yet.

Here is the /6 that was originally in my 68 Barracuda. Even with all the mods it was still a dog but did get a lot of attention at car shows. The 360 I built for it makes at least double the built /6.

The /6 I originally built for the Cuda.

Here is the 360 that replaced the /6.

My first vehicle at 16 years old was a 1992 Dakota with this exact paint/wheel package (though the photo isn't mine, I'd have to dig up an old one somewhere) with a V8 and dual straight-pipe Flowmasters out back that produced a rich, deep rumble that always surprised everyone, with credit to the V8.

It was my grandpa's truck for a long time and it got handed down to my older brother, and then myself. Such a powerful motor in that thing that was much too quick off the line for a 16 year old. My brother and I would beat Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds, etc off the line all the time. The best of times!

I too would be tempted to go after a new Dakota, but I also know they would never have the magic of that old 92' and deep down I'd always be comparing.

For now, the Ranger will do and I'm falling more in love with it each passing year.

I remember watching a reality TV show in the late '90's, or maybe early 2000's, involving a drunk wrong way driver in a Dakota and a Cadillac sedan. At freeway speeds, the Dakota hit the Cadillac head on. All 4 passengers in the Cadillac perished. The drunk in the Dakota suffered non life-threatening injuries. Unbelievable.
