That's fair. GM full-size trucks and SUVs frequently come with auto lockers. I guess I am accustomed to the Torsen limited slip in my ATS and how I don't have to think about its operation.

I know limited slips have serious disadvantages when off-roading, though.
Key word is LIMITED. The friction discs wear and slip more.

There are no midsized trucks for sale in the US factory equipped with a Detroit (auto) locker.

You might as well just weld your diff.
All Z71 trucks come with the Eaton G80, which is a true auto locker.

Any guesses as to why Ford went with an electronic rear locker, not an auto-locker?

Just wondering for convenience-sake.

Thanks!
Electric locker can run open diff at all times. Leaves choosing to lock up to driver. I prefer this myself. I think the auto lockers are more complex and may wear faster.

Bottom line though is that a limited slip will be the last driveline component to fail unless it is subjected to unreasonable abuse. Also, Auburn and Torsen are different designs.
Torsen has no clutches.

The Chevy Colorado is a midsized truck, yes.
Guess I should've qualified that with "worth buying."

Besides, the most capable Colorado uses an E locker front and rear.

Eh, the Canyon is objectively nicer than the Ranger with really nice features like auto-4wd. I like my Ranger, but if money was no object I would probably have bought a diesel Canyon.

Uggghh.

I wasn't impressed by the one I test drove. Perhaps the refresh is better?

The v6 lacks torque compared to the Ranger's 2.3L and the 8 sp. is not as good as the Ranger's 10 sp. Next gen is going to get the 2.7T and 10 sp.

Other than the Ranger's powertrain you're really splitting hairs on the vehicle's details.

I had a 2wd one for a rental while my Fusion was in the body shop an it was OK. It wasn't a base model or loaded, about like my XLT an I could have lived with the V6 but I didn't see any advantages over a ranger.

the pricing structure at Chevy is so bad that they don't even PRETEND to be competitive with the Ranger until you reach the $45000 mark.
Check and see what Chevy offers at entry level... NO CONTEST!
You can buy an XL level Ranger with Performance and mechanicals more capable than Chevy's top of the line.
If you overlook a few trinkets, the Ranger wins hands down and you get to keep at least enough cash in your wallet to give you hip dysplasia on the trip home from the dealer!.
