Took my 2019 Ranger in for an oil change today at the ford dealer that has done all of my maintenance. They told me my lug nuts were swollen and needed to be replaced otherwise they could not rotate tires. I said go for it, and asked if this would be covered on the power train warranty- as the truck came with a lifetime powertrain warranty when I purchased it. To my surprise they claim lug nuts are not part of the power train. Can anyone explain the reasoning why lug nuts would not be part of the power train? They are essential for the car to move, right? (I checked the literature and agree they are not covered as it’s written but I don’t agree with it)

btw today’s service was at 110k miles, with my only issue being an EGR sensor that went bad at 65k miles. Original transmission going strong!

Powertrain is engine/transmission/diffs. It is also defined in the warranty documentation. I could make the argument, using your logic, that tires are part of the powertrain, since
They are essential for the car to move, right?

I would imagine the warranty specifically excludes ware items/consumables like tires (where the rims, should they rust/corrode to would be covered), but lug nuts are not items/consumables, thus should be covered. They swelled due to a cheap pressed on cover over the real steel nut underneath. That a manufacturing defect and should be covered, IMO.

I hope they did not just put new Ford nuts back on (unless Ford has gone to one piece solid nuts). There was a big long thread here on Ranger5G on this topic a couple years ago. The result of that was folks replacing their lug nuts on their own dime to avoid the swelling issue.

These are what I got:
24 Lug Nuts 12x1.5 Chrome Replacement Lugs fits 6 Lug Ford Ranger OE Wheels
Now down to ~$32 for the full set

I imagine they don't cover them under warranty is precisely what PltFX4 said. They are a pressed-on cosmetic cover over a real lug nut prone to swell due to rust. Ford knows this, as that same design has been used for decades, they were on my '95 F150. Ironically, rust is not something we in Louisiana have to worry about.

I really, really. really debated over posting this....but I just couldn't help myself.......
(It's 95 degrees here, stuck in the house with nothing better to do !!!)
Trying to figure a way to apply it to the Ranger's swollen nuts.....

How to get rid of swollen nuts?

Elevate scrotum by placing a rolled up towel between your legs. It will help relieve pain and swelling. Wear a loose-fitting athletic supporter for daily activities. Avoid excessive activity until the swelling disappears.

I thought we were talking about trucks not vasectomies

I bet you got that from the Ford Service Manual...

I understand your frustration.
Owned and DD a 1990 Jeep YJ for 6 years from 2005 to 2011. Had the same crappy type of of lug nuts. Was shocked, dismayed and maybe a little upset when my brand spanking new 2019 Ranger came with the same crappy type of lug nuts ( am mine has the black out package, go figure). Fortunately plenty of other ranger owners were peeved and provided numerous options for replacements.

Just don't understand the reasoning for a 2 part lug nut. Certainly a disconnect between designer, engineer and accounting department. They all probably have Ford management demos and never do any work on them.

The reason the lug nuts are swollen is primarily due to impact wrenches hammering them off and on. If they have done all the tire rotations tell them thanks. They all use impacts.

Okay, true thread derailment here. =p

I'm going to share way too much information with what happened to Soupie's owner (staying anonymous to protect the innocent - certainly won't protect your reaction though).

At the start of last summer, I found a tick on the main body part of Grumpaw's suggested solution.

Man, it swelled up like a cantaloupe! =(

Went to urgent care and they didn't do anything (I expect that, despite being a locally revered dump runner, the early 30's female doctor had no desire to examine an old man's bean bag!).

Had to get special support and it took three months to get close to normal size.

photo not accurate, little Willy comes out the hole (it's very odd feeling)

this sizing must be for only one of the low hanging fruit, because the pouch is pretty big

I came to this thread because I wanted to know what swollen lug nuts were. I don't think I've ever heard of this before.

Turns out, like many threads here, it was a wise choice.
I learned something. And something else, now I know what swollen lug nuts are. :giggle:

Same as any mfg decision: Cost. Solid acorn lug nuts are more expensive. Getting a class 'A' finish and plating is more expensive than a shiny sheet metal cap.
My gen 1 Durango had them. I did my own rotations. Several times the caps stuck in the socket. I finally said FI, and used two sockets. A smaller one for the naked lug nuts. Buy this time the rest of the Durango wasn't so pretty anymore.
