big 10-4. We recently went to Capron, IL to visit Mrs. Motorpsychology's aunt & cousins. Neither of us like flying, or Interstate driving much (3.5Mmi in a semi is enough), but the latter is the lesser of two evils for us. Objectively, as my OCD kicks into Warp 9, I analyzed it to see what the trip's actual cost would've been had we flown:Actually, I meant in jail, but yes, I totally agree with the benefits of road-tripping; I haven't flown down to NC in a long time, I always drive.
I ran the numbers about a decade ago, and between getting to the airport, being there X hours early for all of the government stuff, doing the actual flying, getting a rental and then having to get from the airport, it takes me almost as long to fly as to drive, costs me about 30x more, and the rental probably barely has the power to handle the mountains in the summer, never mind the winter. Or, I can drive down in much greater comfort, not have to worry about oversize luggage charges, and know that my truck can handle the terrain.
Drive to Auntie’s:
4h 45mn 323 mi @ 21mpg =15.38gal @ $3.70/g = $57.91 x 2 Round Trip = $113.82, 9.5h
Fly to Aunties:
Drive to MSP airport 28mi/21mpg/1.33gal x 3.7 = $4.93 x2 RT = $9.87, 40min
x2 = 1h 20mn
Park & Fly $14/day x2= $28. Shuttle time ~7min x2 = 14min arr 90 mn early deplane/ depart airport `20mn to/from P&F
Sun Country nonstop 1h 44mn x 2 = 3h28mn $118RT Cousin Ron Picks us up/brings us back $0/31mn x 2 = 1h 2mn 90m arrive before flight to MSP
DRIVE TO AUNTIES ROUND TRIP: 9.5H, $113.82
FLY TO AUNTIES ROUND TRIP: 7.9 h, $118 + 9.87 +28 = $155.87, 0hr 8 mn time savings = 4 mn each way. $42.05 more expensive, or ~9¢ a second.
And flying does not include the inconveniences of less than ideal flight times and Cousin Ron's shuttling us to and from RFD, and would've been even more time & money had we rented a car in IL.
Ranger Rocks!
