Ummmm....

Page 148 of your owners manual would disagree with this statement.

It's well known that Ford EcoBoosts use an octane adjustment ratio to alter timing for a given fuel.

This is why your manual states that 87 is REQUIRED and 91 is RECOMMENDED.
Fair point. Thanks for the clarification.

Has your gas mileage improved or are you too busy putting your foot in it to care? ?
I haven’t finished my most recent tank, and the other two tanks included towing. I did manage about 17 mpg towing a 5x8 U-Haul trailer.

Is that hand calculated mileage towing the trailer?
I only ask because I pulled my 5x8 loader with a zero turn and it knocked me down to like 11 mpg

Yes, it was hand calculated. I also took small state highways, so I spent most of my time at 55 mph. I’m pretty sure we had a strong tailwind that day, too. The trailer wasn’t that full either.

The prior two times I made the same trip with the same type of trailer, I got about 15 mpg, but the trailer was very full and we were driving into headwinds.

Ah gotcha, I unfortunately had to take the interstate and maintained 65 -70 mph

I've run 87 since new (stock, no tune) and the truck runs great, getting 22-24 hwy mpg. I decided to try 93, and just started my second tank. No discernible difference yet to my butt dyno, and mpg appears similar. Do I need to give it more time to feel a difference?

Oddly, my mpg -- which is already a very-low 19 mpg on the highway regardless of how i drive -- goes DOWN as i increase octane. Normally it's 19 mpg with 87.
I tried a few tanks of different octane to see if it helped, and 91 was 17 mpg. 89 was 18 mpg.

Same gas station, same weather, same driving, etc. It was a very clear trend for my vehicle at least...

It wasn't a case of "oh, you're accelerating harder with higher octane because it gives more power". i have a throttle controller as well and the acceleration is gentle.

I've found I drive faster in the truck than my subi because the truck rides so smooth at speed.

That probably also impacts my mpgs....

Ie my subi would shake like it was leaving the atmosphere at ~65. The ranger barely notices when I'm doing 85....

At the price of premium in my area, I only put it in when it's needed. There's no sense in me flushing my hard earned cash down the drain for any sort of perceived improvement when not required.

* did you know us Canadians have a horsepower advantage over you southerners simply because our Canadian air is colder and denser? Its like a national sized intercooler.

I would give it another tank. I noticed the engine sounded smoother.

Here in Missouri one will find either 91 or 93 but not both at different stations. I run either 91 or 93 depending on where I stop and what is available. My truck is still 100% stock.

I did try running 3 or 4 tanks of 87 octane and I could definitely tell a difference between it and premium gas. My fuel mileage went from an average of 22 MPG to and average of 18 MPG when running 87. Those numbers were hand calculated and the trip computer was still really close to the same. My mileage went back up after switching back to 91 or 93 octane.

My truck also did not run as well on 87 compared to 91/93.

I have also noticed that my truck gets slightly better miles per gallon when I buy 93 octane that is ethanol free.

I had to drive eight miles out of my way - and eight miles back to find E85 near by. Being cautious I put in $5 cash worth (it was about the same price as 93 octane 10%) but of course over 100 octane then filled with premium.

I'm not advocating running straight E85, our trucks weren't specifically built for it. That said they clearly can tolerate ethanol - in spite of the 15% limit in literature I've driven extensively with 94 octane E30 and got noticeable performance with the barest ding in mileage and much lower cost.

A day on this cocktail and no codes. Truck runs smooth.

I might clear the KAM tables and reset the onboard computer to see how my MPG's are but otherwise I've been somewhat abusive of the gas pedal.

Butt dyno doesn't note any extraordinary performance but it is smooth. If I work out some cost vs. benefit generalities to blending at the pump maybe I'll integrate it into my fuel schedule.

Just need reasons to go that far out of the way ?
