I had Amp Research retractable steps on my last 1/2 ton pickup. I could always hoist myself up, but my 5'0" wife it was a real scramble. Those steps were the bomb from the standpoint that when deployed, they landed almost exactly where you wanted them to be an actual step and get you right where you could land square in the seat without a major duck maneuver and the risk of smacking your head when moving quickly.

The other things I loved about them was when folded up, they were almost nonexistent visually. They always worked flawlessly for me.

The only negative is we used to get on some pretty gnarly trails and truth be told, I wasn't all that careful when in these gnarly spots, so I did get a few pretty deep scratches and dings in them. I had some touch up paint that made the scratches very hard to see, but for serious off roading, probably not an ideal choice.

I will almost certainly install them on my new 2022 Ranger, when the right deal comes along.

Don't use them at all really - to me they seem a little awkward to use for the height of the truck (maybe it's because they're the OEM steps?). The last vehicle I had with running boards was my Expedition and I used them all the time to get in and out. Now, my wife, on the other hand, uses them all the time to get in the Ranger.
I have the OEM steps as well. I find them virtually unusable. If I step up on them I have to duck to keep from hitting my head. They've remained on my truck for the wife and kids though. My wife is only an inch shorter than me but has some dexterity issues they help with.

Would love to add the AMP powersteps at some point.

I dont use them to get in and out. I will use them to stand on when I wash the truck to get the roof.

I’ve considered ditching them since my brother has a ranger without them and I kinda like the look but I’ll just keep them for now

I would prefer not to have them, but my wife likes them and uses them whenever we take the Ranger. She would complain until I installed them, so they were ordered before the truck arrived.

My truck did not come with running boards. Could be wrong but I assumed the FX4 package specifically does not include them for ground clearance.
FX4 does not include them. Some of the appearance packages do.

A non-lifted Ranger was perfect height for me. My right foot landed on the brake pedal, my ass centered on the seat. Running boards just got in the way, and made my pant leg dirty.

Being lifted, on bigger tires, and boards removed I do drag the seat edge. That is part of why I got leather though, so it will polish and not wear too bad like cloth will. If it does wear through, I'll send them in for AC venting :)

I never used the factory steps, because they were at an odd height. When I stepped up on them I had to then hunch down to get in the cab. Getting out I just stepped over them. I finally bit the bullet and bought the Amp Research retractable steps. They are awesome, lower than the stock ones, so I can step up and then get in the cab without hunching into an odd angle. Wife loves them too which the most important thing! I now have a set of OEM steps to get rid of, anybody interested?

Um... My FX4 has step bars...Not the same as running boards though...

Best,
Phil
I googled it. They're an optional feature for Sport and Chrome appearance packages, FX4 package has no influence on running boards.

And for the record, the catalog only offers running boards! lol

I have the OEM ones that came on the Black Appearance Package. I use them every time I get in the truck. I have to grab top of the door frame with my left hand too to get in. I'm barely 5'3". If they didn't come on the truck, I would have had them put on.

Thanks for sharing the pic. Was curious what running boards looked like installed on the Scab (not the Screw). I def need them cuz after 2.5 level it's awkward maneuvering into vehicle at 5ft 8". Also good idea to save the edge of seat bolster cushion like you mentioned
Here is a picture of my ‘22 Scab with the Westin HDX Nerf steps. I added mine for my wife, but I use them. As someone said, miss the grab handle.

My FX4 came with them, but maybe that’s because it has the black package, too.
I just looked it up. Its an optional feature for the Chrome and Sport appearance packages, at least for 2022. You can probably option them on any truck though. FX4 has no effect on running boards.

I have a 2019 chrome pkg. XLT. The chrome running boards were extra. So were the 18" chrome wheels.
