I want to add a rail for mounting an iPad Pro and a few other things. Is there anything underneath the tray that would secure it more than just the plastic clips
In addition to the 2 blue clips and the thing in the center, there are small tabs all around the perimeter of the tray that help keep it solid. I think it would be plenty sturdy with an iPad attached (depending how you attach it I suppose). You could always put a short screw or two in as well if you really wanted - there are a bunch of places where that would work.

This base was made from a solid piece of plastic for a base, which was cut to fit the OEM tray.
It remains rock solid in place with double faced tape tabs and can be easily removed without damage to the tray.
I realize that a GPS is generally smaller then a tablet but anything much bigger would start to block the driver's view out the windshield...

I'm going to be articulating forward and down, so size is not an issue

I went crazy ? Machined a back plate as I connected an arm to mine. It keeps it from vibrating. It’s tricky to get the insert back to full seating after removal. In the end with mine I decided to use threaded back blocks and fastened it down so I know it won’t pop out on its own from arm leverage. I post another of it installed with the arm on it.

not sure what that's going to do at all. The big issue I see is a bunch of cheap plastic clips and tabs holding a tray down that how has a ton more weight

Doesn't show it in that picture. I cut off the two outside center mount clips and then use 10-32 fasteners to threaded blocks under the dash mount points. Its in there solid now, even in an accident it isn't going anywhere.

Awesome, that's exactly what I'm planning, How did you hold/attach the threaded blocks?

Used metal threaded inserts into 3/4 X 1 X 2" delrin plastic. Applied double sided tape to stick them to the mating cross member. Opened up the slots for more room for the 1/4 fastener . I said 10-32 but I used 1/4-20 my bad. 3/4 inch long fasteners. Centered holes to centerline of recessed strips in tray. They're offset slightly to the mounting slots and posts I cut off.

Does anyone know the part number for the little blue clips. One of mine fell into the dash and never came out that I saw. Tray does not really sit flush anymore without it.

I posted part numbers in my build linked below. The clips are $10 each and a whole new tray (including clips) is $28. I just bought a whole new tray.
