Great minds think alike! That wasis indeed a fantastic idea and actually the first thing I thought of doing to get a smooth surface and full fill of the bottom of the tray. What stopped me from doing this was the adhesion of resin isn't usually the greatest when used on a smooth surface, so I would have had to put studs in as anchor points to keep the resin in place, basically making exactly the same thing I made only without having the small gaps around it.

That said, I had a CNC Mill, 3/8 Polycarbonate, and free time to draw it all up and mill the sheet. I figured that this was faster for instant use than waiting for resin to dry after placing studs. I was impatient haha.
Hi Derak,

Well done!

Hey OP, thanks for those dimensions. They came in handy rather than pull the tray out. I like putting my glasses in there but things slide around too much.
I have some sheets of felt laying around maybe .125" thick, black of course, and I cut it out per your specs. I only exposed the adhesive backing to the 7 raised strips.
Fit like a glove and now kind of padded. Looks attractive too. Thanks again!

My pleasure! I figured it would come in handy for anyone that may have other ideas for it. Sharing is caring right? Using felt is a great idea for anyone that wants a soft bottom without removing the tray, so kudos on a great idea!

Beautiful solution!
I solved it in a low-tech manner by using 3-M Command strips (2 of them) on the raised ribs and placing a camping stainless steel rescue signal mirror on top. It works well, hasn't come loose in 2 months in SC, and holds a cell-phone sized suction cup with monitor rock-solidly.

That is fantastic, thanks for the info @Darek661! I wonder what I can come up with 3D printed for this, I'm not super wild about drilling into it, but I could grab a spare one from Ford or something and do it that way.

I haven't tried, but I can't imagine it's terribly hard to pop out that tray?

You could try using some velcro strips between the raised ribs to hold it down instead of drilling through it? Maybe one on the center and two on the edges and I'd think it should hold just fine.

That's kind of what I was thinking as well.

Hi Doug,

Hopefully you are headed to the Grill and Bar. Never noticed that my tray was that warm, but for the most part...this is never used for anything more than a temp place for our mail from our mailbox at the UPS store..

That's where the tortillas came from it's a Mexican restaurant. The sun through the windshield kept them warm. lol

The tray is pretty easy to pop up, the hardest part is the three center locking tabs. just wedge a flatblade or a piece of flatstock right next to it and twist, it'll come right out.

That's a great idea! in hindsight I would have done something like that had I not been looking at holding a tablet from that mounting point. The only thing that I'm not super fond of with the way mine turned out is that the flat HDMI cable for my tuner makes the tray want to pop out a little easier than I would have liked. I didn't trim any plastic under the tray on the dash to make room for it so I've got the cable routed a little oddly. I may pop it back out and notch a wire channel for the cables to tuck into without being sandwiched between the dash support for the tray and the bottom of the tray itself.

I think your design is great and you're right I don't think it would hold a tablet well. I was just thinking that the velcro might work out as an option for those who didn't want to drill into their tray and were using their phone or a mini tablet. I guess you could price out another tray (should't be to expensive) and have it as a back up for when you sell your truck.:)

To keep items from sliding around in the dash tray, I cut a non-slip pad to fit. It’s a soft spongy material that grips fairly well when there is weight on it.

Fyi, I tried Velcro strips on the tray and it wouldn’t adhere — peeled right off. (This was the industrial strength stuff, too.) I’ve been slowly working on a partially DIY phone mounting solution involving the tray which I’ll post when I solve it. I love that others here are working on similar things and see potential to customize this part of the truck!
