I apologize

Forgive me for not catching that:please:

So, is this an actual (Heater Grid) in the windshield or is it just the name the (ROW) Rangers use for Defrost?
It's a heated grid with a separate button.

There is also a max defrost button, but that will just crack the 1/4 - 1/5 bottom of the windscreen over time.

I live in cold country. We're having an old fashioned winter here with lots of single digit temps over the last few weeks, below zero not unusual. Today was a balmy 25 degrees, felt like spring and just an inch or so of light fluffy snow. Had to do some chores, started the truck and pushed max defrost for the first time. and got out to brush the snow off. Went back inside house for a moment. Total time of less than 5 minutes from starting truck to getting back in to leave.
Cracked windshield from bottom left to center of driver viewing area, probably 18-20 inches. Max defrost is a powerful blast. I'm usually wary of regular defrost in very cold temps for this reason, but wasn't real cold today. Max defrost seems a bit of overkill doesn't it?
You get into your 70's and hope that lesson learning slows down, guess not.
I have had it happen when the sun hits the windshield, normally there is a chip where it starts.

Checked this morning and there was the smallest chip you'd imagine, maybe a millimeter. Located bottom left in the black area of windshield, would never see without looking very closely from the outside. Would never know unless windshield cracked

Enough reason for me to forgo max defrost,at least during winter.

I put that Ford deflector on my hood and so far it seems to kick road debris over the roof. Without it everything hit the windshield. Don't know if I'm lucky or it makes a difference. I use max defrost when we are out with it.

Ok - Google revealed - Ford has a Heated Front Windshield (Quick Clear) for the European Market.
The stuff we learn on this forum, right?

Happened to me in a Mustang I had back in the 80's. We had record low temps below zero, I drove to work and it was fine but when I came out there was a big crack across the windshield. At the time I parked in a parking garage in the city so it was probably even colder in there. The glass guy said it happens a lot in very cold temps because there is too great a difference between the inside and outside of the glass.

I can almost guarantee, there was a small rock chip in the black part of the windshield. Very common, I’ve replaced windshields for over 20 years. Temperature change in general is very bad on glass, especially if there is a flaw or rock chip.

Use the heated front window button instead of defrost. It keeps the temperature gradient stable accross the windshield so it does not crack.
We don't get that feature in the US, I really wish I had it on the RS too as I know it was an option in EU.
