Indeed, my dad's dealer has no less than 20 10r80s stocked at any given time. They do several every week. He never does a repair under esp because they always come back. Every one he touches gets a new box.
Ask him how long it actually takes to do the transmission swap on a Ranger.

It is my understanding that many road tractors are now being built as automatics. I don't know how many new students are being trained on manual transmissions, but I sure hope it's all of them.
Yes I’ve seen that as well. What I’ve noticed that the more rural transport/smaller companies usually are running older trucks so I have to assume those are manual though. I have a feeling it’s not required to learn manual to pass for your CDL anymore, but I imagine finding a job that’s not with one of the big freight carriers would be difficult without manual experience.

About 4-5 hours for 2wd and 6 for a 4x4.
And are there any magical spells or incantations that need to be performed to make the new transmission play nice with the truck?

I highly suspect it's not plug and play.

I believe the valve body strategy for the new transmission needs to be programmed. Additionally, procedurally he flushes all of the cooler lines as well. I'm sure there are a few things here and there but the 4x4 is a pain in the ass for to the additional things that need to be removed.

Was it as smooth as that name makes it sound? Only have been in vehicles post 1990. I truly wish manuals were still offered on most vehicles besides sports cars. Might even learn to drive a semi truck 18 speed if that is what it takes
Yes, it was one of it's loved features. It's hard to explain, but it's most important component was it's torque converter. It transmitted power based on RPM and load, and really didn't need multiple gears. In fact, in it's infancy it was a single speed transmission. But demand for lower end response made way for two gearings.
In everyday driving, you could hardly discern the shift.

Are there any special procedures for those who bring in tuned trucks who don't revert back to stock tune before bringing it in for a new trans?

CDLs now can say automatic only…. Sad day for the over the road truckers.

Going to look at a ZR2 tomorrow. A friend is a Chevy salesman and said he can get me a good deal on it. The dealer offers a free lifetime powertrain warranty.
A lifetime warranty sounds good. There's a dealership here that offers one but I don't know anyone that's every tried a claim on a higher mileage car with them. They probably figure most people change vehicles every 3 or 4 years now.

I thought Ford and GM developed this trans together. I've heard they have problems too. Don't know about full blown failures but lots of problems.

Cant be tuned. Otherwise they cannot access the factory tables. Those get stored on the tuner. I had to go in and reflash mine. Dealer mechanic called me and asked personally.

Wow, sounds awesome - thanks. I Always enjoy learning about cars or anything really now that I think about it!

not all dealers are like this but if Ford wants to keep this quiet, they better approve replacements and pay out.

The Colorado doesn't use the 10 speed.

They use an 8 speed.

The previous gen Colorado had LOTS of problems with its transmission.

The main issues I've seen on the new ones is electrical gremlins that GM seems to finally be sorting out.

And here I bought the Ranger because in my mind I said, "The 10R80 is the same transmission used in the 450HP Raptor. It should be rock solid behind a 4 cylinder."

Famous last words.

Going to look at a ZR2 tomorrow. A friend is a Chevy salesman and said he can get me a good deal on it. The dealer offers a free lifetime powertrain warranty.

Of course, this right after I bought a ton of stuff for this truck.

But after the last drop off for HVAC issues and transmission issues and another "No Problem Found" (no, they didn't do the pressure test indicated in the TSB because they didn't have the equipment), I am honestly about done with this thing. Upon leaving the dealer I had cold air on the driver side and heat on the passenger side. And it slammed into 4th gear.

It's becoming like a bad girlfriend. I hate it one day and love it the next.

In my past experience with bad girlfriends, the only lasting solution was a different girlfriend.
I don’t know what drives the advertisements on this site but your post and this advertisement right after it cracked me up:

anyway, I understand your feelings. I do think Ford’s last couple of years with the 10R80 have improved with the redesigned parts on the F-150, and everyone says the 10R60 on the newest Ranger is excellent. They also snuck in a brand new 2.3L engine on the 2025 Ranger and added dual injection to clean the valve build up, but didn’t advertise it.

I’m leery of GM as well. Sometimes I think it’s a tad unnecessary to spazz about GMs data harvesting history (axing Apple CarPlay and such in favor of their own spy programs), but something about how they went about it irked me.

that leaves me either sticking with Ford or going to Toyota or Nissan. I wonder if Honda will ever get serious with the Ridgeline as it’s a solid engine platform.

anyway, good luck with your decisions!

Ha!

I don't see any ads so I didn't know such was there!

As far as mid-size trucks, my options are:

Colorado (OnStar known to be a data harvester)
New Ranger (a bit bigger  and likely prone to Ford's lackluster response to issues)
Tacoma (just plain ugly)
Frontier (Umm, nope)
Keep what I have and see if I can change her. :headbang:

Definitely not the new Tacoma as I find find them downright garish.

Not the Frontier as my 2018 pretty much removed them from my consideration.

So Colorado and Ranger.

I'm tempted to skip the Ranger just because of how Ford dodges the known issues.

Will GM be any better? Who knows.

Notice I didn't mention the Gladiator.

My desire for a Gladiator ranks somewhere between a date with Rosie O'Donnell and a colonoscopy while I'm awake. No thanks.
