Same thing just happened to my 19 ranger at 100,000 dealer wants $2200 for front. Over fix and 980 for crank sensor since it got soaked in oil can't drive it goes into limp mode anybody know what needs to be done in the computer to replace crank sensor that what's holding me back from fixing myself

See this link for the electronic engine controls (303-14) crankshaft position sensor replacement under the 300 powertrain section. You will have to download 303-14.

It requires two special tools and a diagnostic scan tool to calibrate the PCM.

As in over $3k or $2200 for everything? I would look for a local repair shop. That's insane. They are likely charging you 1hr anyway so stall and say your trying to borrow money. Call around in the meantime.

I have extended warranty but I have been wanting to find a good shop for when that runs out. Dealer techs are a roll of the dice. I have been burned from dealers and independent shops. I REALLY wish I had the time to work on my own vehicles like in my 20s. It's even more frustrating when you know how to fix cars but don't have time (former Benz tech and gear head).

Ran across this thread and wanted to ask if anyone has tried to do this on their own yet? I just got my oil changed and the stealer said leaky front crank seal -

I have seen worse but with that angle sensor there it makes me a bit nervous.

I have not done this procedure on the Ranger but have done quite a few - Timing Covers & Seals over the years.
It not that hard of a job and the front cover seal can be done (On-Truck) without pulling the complete cover off.
However since this is a keyless pulley and the sensor requiring a alignment tool, the job requires special tools to keep the Crank & Cams in alignment when you pull the pulley, the seal itself also calls out for a special set of tools (puller & installer) - you can possibly get by using a alternative tool for that but you must be careful not to damage the cover.

The alignment tools are a must to ensure the engine stays in alignment

Ballpark for all required tooling via quick Ebay search =Between $500 -$800, must piece together the tools, they are engine specific and that's why they are expensive.
Auto-Parts stores will not have these as Loaners

I would honestly consider a new or reman long block at that point. They are not much more and no specific tools needed.
