I don't have any experience in my Ranger, 1 week old, 186 miles and 120 are to and from dealer 1 1/2 times. But, since most of my driving will be on road, I found a Sport with the locker. Stayed away from the FX4 because of the ride. Will I miss it the few times I'd appreciate it? Yes. But I won't get stuck, and driving will be comfortable. Now if your going off road more often, you may want the package.

Most guys get the FX4 package for the sticker on the back fender. I don't care about such things.

The only thing I wanted out of the FX4 package was the rear locker and, fortunately for me, you can get this as a stand-alone option, so that is what I did and that is what I recommend.
THIS! I wish I would have had the locker but there's nothing else in the FX4 package that I would have wanted. I hope an LSD comes out soon!

Unfortunately the locker is only an option for the Lariat.

There are aftermarket options that require to have an air compressor.

After shopping around for a few weeks I finally scored an XLT with the FX4 for a good deal.?

Hmm, I'll have to look into this, unsure of what the 501a package is.
Gregg covered it well. I’m a musician too so the B & O system was a big plus for me along with navi, cruise control, remote start etc.

I didn't see where you could get it by itself on XL and XLT models, it only comes in the STX or FX4 package from my understanding. On a Lariat you can add just the locker when building on Ford.com.

Hilarious, Doc. You are a genius.

But, not worrying about impressing women is another reason that it is good to be married to my lovely wife!

well, the bash plates and terrain management are no small thing...saving the FX-4 suspension for any aftermarket investment (and any decent coilover/shock combo will set you off at least $1200); so, to me the FX-4 makes sense
My last truck was an '05 F150 equipped similarly to my new Ranger, no FX4 - just 4x4 with the rear "positraction". For my needs, the stock shocks are fine and I have never bashed where a bash-plate would have helped, alas.

I live on a mountain dirt road with a 1,000' elevation gain in 1.5 miles. Now, imagine that with a foot of snow, ice underneath.

Given adequate tires - chains when needed, when I hop in my Ranger I am King of the Mountain.

I am retired and my wife has a 2.0 Escape, so this is really just my fishing truck. I pursue trout in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. I don't know if you have ever fished some of these small mountain streams, but you can not get there a lot of times in your Impala or your minivan. The Rocky Mountains are notorious for, um, rocks. Big rocks.

In all of my travels, both with the F150 and with the Ranger, the standard suspension with 4x4 and "posi" has never given me any worries.

Same here.

My wife is the only girl I care to impress.

And since she's been with me for over 25 years she's either easily impressed or not quite as smart as I thought she was when I met her

"Just my fishing truck" I'm a bit envious of this statement, my retirement goal. Have any pictures of some catches? Perhaps that could be an off topic thread, "Big Fish Stories."?

So the only thing I regret about getting a 4x4 sport was that I was unable to find an XLT crew with the locker axle, without the offroad package.

With the exception of bad snow/ice rarely if ever would I need a locking rear diff. but would have liked to have it.

The FX4 skids I am ordering for $300 for the pair, and the shocks and springs I can buy used, but I ended up talking my F.B.D. ( future baby daddy ) into letting me get the Fox stage 1 kit since I didn't get the FX4, so to Im glad I didn't get the FX4 package only to strip off the suspension.

Although the trail control would have been nice!

Do the 4x4 Rangers have this fancy little gadget or is this part of the Fx4 package?
