Hello all,

I read somewhere that Ford recommends changing the filter screen in the oil line delivering oil to
the turbo's at 30.000 miles??
Has anyone else seen this or heard of this or has done this procedure?
Just trying to learn more about it.

Thanks

I do not know of any (Interval) for replacement by Ford, as long as you are keeping up with regular oil changes @ 5,000 then the Turbo Filter should be fine,
Now if you wanted (preventive) just for the comfort it was changed then a ballpark of every 60,000 to 75,000 miles or so would be a good timeline or whatever you choose.

This is the first I‘ve heard mention of this filter screen, so I checked the maintenance schedule on the FordPass app. It‘s not mentioned in their Maintenance Schedule.

So, I checked the Owner’s Manual - didn’t see it there either.

However, while I was reading, I found out some interesting information to pass along. Folks in hotter climates might be wise to check out this section of the manual.

SPECIAL OPERATING CONDITIONS SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
Hot Climate Oil Change Intervals
Vehicles operating in the Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa or locations with similar climates using an American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines (Certification mark) oil of SM or SN quality, the normal oil change interval is 4,800 km (3,000 mi).

You may or may not think you qualify as living in a similar climate to the places mentioned but I think it’s interesting how hotter climates (AZ, SoCal, TX, NM, etc.) affect oil life.

I think @AzScorpion tightened up his oil change interval to approx. 3,000 miles. Not sure if he did it because of desert-living or simply as a best practice. Whatever the reason, it was looks like it was the right move.

I do mine every 5,000 miles and use a full synthetic along with 91 fuel. Luckily the heat isn't as bad down here as it was up in the Phoenix area so I can probably push it another 1,000 miles if I wanted to. That would be just about 1 years worth of driving now until we go on another big trip.

Well shit, I need to replace mine 4 times now. Turbo is probably going bad, time to upgrade.
The truck is junk now, time to trade it in. 😜

Thanks for all the information.
I will see if I can find where I read that and share it with you all.
I want to say it was a Ford article.
Just want to keep informed on the maintenance, I love this truck and would like to
Keep her running as long as I can!

Might not be a bad idea after 100k. I've been using Valvoline Restore & Protect for the last couple years changed every 5k so I think the internals are probably pretty clean.

Subaru used to put those filters on their turbos- IIRC in the banjo bolt itself but I think stopped as they were prone to clogging and oil starvation wasted the turbo anyways,

Exactly. Thing designed to save your turbo killed it. Although in our case there’s hardly any reports of turbo failures due to oil starvation from this filter plugging. So one could probably just remove it if they wanted. It just sticks in the end of the oil supply line at the block. But without any reported issues probably best to just leave it alone.

I have read that long oil interval changes will result in those screens clogging up from oil degradation, starving the turbo bearings of oil. I've been changing at 5K mile intervals or 1 year using only full synthetic. I have never reached a year on any of my autos, even though I am usually well below the 5K limit on 2 of my 3 autos.

I have noticed my CX-5 engine getting louder (lifter noise) as the mileage goes up or I go beyond 6 months, even though Pennzoil Platinum Premium states an annual oil change of 10K / 1 year interval. The lifter noise is still quieter than with fresh 0-20 oil that Mazda recommends to be used in the USA, even though the oil cap has 5w30 written on it, and the owners manual states 0w-20 for North American autos, and 5w30 for the rest of the world (the 2.5L 4 cyl is the exact same engine is in all of Mazda's line up)

Here is the qualifier, most oils advertised as synthetic are not synthetic. Even the highly regarded Pennzoil Platinum Ultra isn't. It is derived from highly refined natural gas. It is better than other fake synthetic brands that are basically refined oil with some small amount of synthetic oil additive package added to the mix.

In the U.S., the term “synthetic” isn’t strictly regulated the way people expect. After a court dispute involving Mobil and Castrol back in the late 1990s, highly refined petroleum oils (Group III) were allowed to be marketed as “synthetic,” even though they’re not “true” synthetic in the original sense.

I think there are really just 3 brands that are full synthetics (PAO Based),
  • Amsoil
  • Red Line (high ester content)
  • Motul (look for “300V” line)
Some mainstream oils are partially true synthetic. These may use a blend of Group III + PAO, depending on the product line: ( These are excellent oils, but not always “pure” PAO anymore.)
  • Mobil 1
  • Pennzoil Ultra Platinum — GTL base)
  • Castrol (EDGE line varies)
Important:
  • Labels like “Full Synthetic” ≠ true synthetic
  • Most off-the-shelf oils at auto stores are Group III
  • You often need to check:
    • Technical data sheets (TDS)
    • Manufacturer disclosures (but these are rarely explicit)
Like everything else in US marketing, we are being lied to. Pick your poison carefully, and trust your instincts. Just because a company or product has grand claims doesn't make it so. Listen to your engine. It will tell when enough is enough.
