Since I'm new here, I see thread after thread of 10R80 horror stories, is it that bad? I have experienced 0 issues in 4 years and 15k miles, but the 5-60 is looming. Is it time to unload it on a 6G Ranger or a F150? ( which all have the 10R80)
It depends, what is the production date on your '22? I hear that mid year in '22 they fixed the issue so late '22s and '23s should not have the CFD drum movement issue. My '21 has randomly acted up since about new, but was getting more frequent after 50k miles. Got it checked out at 58k and tech confirmed it had issues that the strategy reset and basic valve body jobs only made worse. Upon performing the rebuild, the CFD drum was in place, but he stated there was evidence that it had moved out of and back into place. Now I have 12m/12k miles warranty on the warranty work. so transmission is covered by Ford now until about 5 year/70k in my truck. Then I have the 3rd party lifetime powertrain on mine that the dealer included with the sale.

Dave,

While the online "horror stories" can be alarming, it's important to remember that not every owner of a vehicle with a 10R80 transmission will experience these issues. The sheer volume of vehicles produced with this transmission means that even a small percentage of failures can result in a large number of complaints.

The issues appear to stem from a combination of factors, including software, valve body design, and in some cases, internal component wear. Some sources suggest that earlier models of the 10-speed transmission (from 2017-2019) were more prone to problems, and that later models have seen improvements.

Since your 2022 Ranger has been trouble-free for 15,000 miles, it's possible you have a reliable unit. However, your concern about the upcoming end of your warranty is valid.

Here are a few things to consider (with this or any vehicle):
  • Preventative Maintenance: Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial for the longevity of any transmission, and especially complex ones like the 10R80. Ensure you are following Ford's recommended service intervals.
  • Extended Warranty: You might consider purchasing an extended warranty to provide peace of mind after your factory warranty expires.
  • Monitor Your Vehicle: Pay close attention to any changes in your transmission's behavior. If you start to notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, have it checked by a qualified technician immediately.
As for trading it in for a 6G Ranger or an F-150, keep in mind that these vehicles also use the 10R80 transmission (depending on engine type). While newer models may have some improvements, they are not immune to the potential issues.

Ultimately, the decision to keep or sell your Ranger is a personal one. Given that you haven't had any problems so far, it may be worth holding onto. However, if the potential for future issues is a major concern (and you choose not to purchase an extended warranty), exploring your trade-in options could be a reasonable path.

From reading on 5G site...Had my 2022 checked at dealership ..ran all tests...tranny checked out with 21k miles....but still have bell housing slight noise .. occasional jump shift jerking my head back from quick initial acceleration and stopping at a low speed to stop or park.try to not get into such situations.

The Ford dealer tech told me recently newer 6G and F150s have known same tranny problems

Could I be optimistic and hope they are over or under filling them still?
We'll never know with that stupid stubby "dipstick". How can anybody expect to get an accurate reading with that thing?

It's not the size that matters.

My low mileage 2020 has the rough downshift "thunk" into first when coming to a stop. Seems to be worse, or more consistent, when in tow mode (not towing anything). Otherwise I don't experience rough shifts.
Is this an early sign of the CDF issue?
I have a 2020 also and it did that at first when I bought it with only 5000 miles on it. By about 12,000 miles it went away on its own. Sometimes it was so hard that I looked in the mirror thinking I'd been hit.

I bought a 2023 and have 47,000 trouble free miles. Zero issues with truck besides the mice issue discussed ad nauseum here. Fitz stick, PPE tran pan and 30k flushes. Will probably do the lubegurad treatment at the 60k flush. Truck hasnt seen a dealers lot since my purchase. Love it, just wish the bed was longer.

I have 72k miles, bought truck new. I have very hard shifts sparatocally shifting into reverse since new. Occasionally will shift hard in forward. Letting truck warm a few minutes before driving and backing into park spots helps. Also had the trans fluid flushed at 65k which seemed to help allot.

I had it in one dealer in 2024 that I no longer go to that had it several weeks and pretty much did nothing. I was at my new much better Ford service department today and my tech is saying most probably CDC drum ( no shit!) But they would have to take transmission apart examine the condition and damage and determine the repair. Then get Fords approval as I still have 6 months on my extended warrantee. Then I would have to hope the parts are available directly from Ford at least a three week process minimum.

Bummer because it is an awesome truck otherwise. I wanted to drive it another 7 years but not with worrying about replacing an 8k tranny. Really do not forward to a month of warrantee drama.

Now I find myself looking at low milage used Ranger Raptors....someone talk me off the fence!😵💫

Nope. They (10R60) share a lot of the same parts (valves) as the 10R80.

My company 21 F150 4x4 gets the 1st gear clunk sporadically, once it was so hard, I thought the camry behind me had rear ended me.

Corporate drone. Dilbert's world is alive & well.
Just drive it and enjoy it. Several forum members have noted on a variety of threads that there are “best practices” to get the best out of your transmission.

for me, this includes allowing the engine to heat up a bit. This trucks transmission fluid doesn’t like being cold. Accelerate that fluid drain and fill schedule (with a new filter). Those are what I consider the “mandatory” things.

everything else is extra peace of mind if you want.

if you get nervous and want to unload and move to another truck, I’m genuinely not sure where you go. Problems everywhere. last “bulletproof” trucks I can think of were like 2.5 gen tundras and mid 00s 2500 heavy duty gassers.

sounds to me like your truck has been good to you. If it’s all about money, it might be a good one to roll the dice on and keep longer term to save money. If you just want that new new, then fire away, baby.
bulletproof? Makes me visualize about a 1972 Ford truck, inline 6, 3 on the tree. Just runs forever. Oh, and steel bumpers. Love steel bumpers. In a tight spot? “Think I might have another 2 inches. Nope, that’s it.” 😁
