The 150K fluid change requirement worked exactly as intended, it got you out of warranty and it let Ford claim 'low cost of ownership'.

One should almost always look at factory recommended service intervals through that lense.

I've all but been screaming for the last several years that if you plan on keeping your truck long term, that you need to up the maintenance game, especially on the 10R80.
This.

Not putting blame on original poster, because this absolutely should not be happening to you. But if you want the reduce any change of failure then fluid/ filter should be changed 30k. Filters maybe every 50k.

Same goes with 5k oil changes.

Hope you find a good solution. I'm just keeping tabs on threads like these to know what to do if/ when mine fails.

I do oil changes regularly and use at least a synthetic blend.
If I could go back and do filter every 30k I would in a heart beat. I'd even install a pan with a drain plug and everything.

I have 31k on my 2020, what should I do to prevent this from happening to me ?
If you’re still under the 5/60 power train warranty and have a hint of any shifting issues. Take it in to have it checked out under the TSB.
And/or see if you can purchase an extended warranty.

I'm curious. Did it have a flush or a filter/fluid change?

A lot of people are saying you should have done this or that and think that changing the fluid/filter would have prevented a failed trans.

While it’s known that prior to 23 models have a CDF drum issue, there is a bearing race that moves and blocks oil passage from freely passing through. This causes a variety of problems. The new drum was updated late 22 models have prevented the race from moving hence full flow of the oil.

The drum issue is what I’d think it could be but you never really know until you tear it down. I doubt it’s a fluid issue.

I’d recommend to do due diligence and verify the next trans has the updated drum.

That sucks you don’t have a great experience at the dealer, sounds frustrating. Hopefully the next place you go and do a little homework you can pin down somebody that fully understands the issue and the proper fix. These trucks are pretty reliable as a whole but a few do suffer from premature failure.

Not to hijack the thread, and I am not an expert by any means, but could you theoretically have a shop install one of the two following options to beef up/prevent further issues from happening?

https://www.sonnax.com/parts/5781-cdf-drum-saver-kit

https://nextgendiesel.com/collections/ford-transmissions-transmission-parts/products/10r80-cherry-bomb™-complete-input-drum-assembly-drop-in?variant=42220439666861

https://nextgendiesel.com/collectio...-d-f-drum-assembly-w-anti-walk-bushing-update

My transmission hasn't shown any issues, but its nice to know what options are on the table if something like this happens. Sorry to hear, OP

Thx for all those Drum links. I printed and will keep them at hand! Can't understand how a bushing with interference fit would move at all UNLESS it was manufactured Under-sized

My guess would be hundreds or thousands of heat cycles from cold to hot back to cold etc. drum heats up, it gets bigger, bearing race/bushing is a different material so expands at a different rate and moves each cycle a little bit until it blocks the oil passage.

I think it's the same base but slightly different? 150 has a trans cooler and the ranger doesn't. Expeditions and mustangs have the 10r80 as well
Ranger does have the exact same trans as F150 and all other 10r80 applications. The transmission case looks different but the internals are all the same. The ranger also does have a trans cooler it is just located in a different place from the F150 which actually make dropping the trans pan a little easier.

Stop reading this forum. It creates panic, some unnecessary. I have 95k on my Ranger with no transmission issues to date. I have also been tuned since 5k. I have changed the transmission fluid and filter twice.

I think tuning the transmissions goes a long way. Heck even just the Ford tune i threw on mine has dramatically improved the shift feel, no more clunking and whatnot.

good luck.
mine was fine until juuuuust past 100.
as long as yuo have the CDF drum done i assume that youll be better off but my valves were sticking too. caused underpressure at clutch and steels and they ate themselves.

Long story short
Valves sticking, "skipping" on clutch. Local dealer recommended new trans.
$10880

No rebuild quote. Asked for one. Waiting on that call now.

Took truck in for trans slipping, bucking, faling out of gear behavior I didnt know was an issue until after I left. Told them I needed fluid and filter and probably some diagnostics. 3.5hrs later as I'm paying for the fluid change, tech mentions that I "should bring it back in for diagnostics. Nothing changed."
I got pissed and passive aggressive and left a Google review. Was given a free loaner while they had the truck for diagnostics ans told that Ford and the dealer would work with me on a solution.

Got the call today with info at the beginning of the post, was told that Ford coverage ends at 100k. I'm livid.

I can't afford 11k for a new trans. Shit, I can't afford half that. That's why I have a ranger not a 150...
What are my options? Help?
Dang...I was robbed $6,000 and thought that was bad...At least you got 15K mile more than I did...$10,000 for new tranny?!?!

That's what I said...right up to 95K miles...good luck...

THIS! I had my transmission replaced at 59k and was still experiencing low speed shifting issues, who knows, they probably tossed in an off the shelf transmission with the old drum in it. After various recommendations and one from the mechanic who put my transmission in, I decide to bite the bullet and get the Ford Performance Tune. The difference in shifting is night and day and the added horsepower for me is merely a bonus, they all should of left the factory with this shifting strategy. If your on the fence do it, you wont regret it.
