This is horrible design. You have to collect hay for all summer and oats in autumn just to keep this design running. And if you get unlucky with weather you even have to pile the hay to haystack in order to get it somewhat dry and survive over winter.

Only positive thing with these is that the new model comes each year for free (although you have to relearn the AI on each individual vehicle).

Trust me, I know these things as I've been feeding them since 90's...
You forgot the waste cleanup and the methane gas exhausted into the atmosphere. Grooming is about equal to some peoples detailing their vehicle, so that's a wash.

End of the day all that matters is that you like it, because none of us have to (or want to ?) drive it.

I piss all over EVs because there's SOOO much hype and push for them and frankly, no upside at all. They don't do anything better than an ICE vehicle.

The acceleration is better, okay ? I'll give you that, it's how electric motors work after all, but what else does it do better? Nothing.

They don't have better range. Your routes are limited by the charging infrastructure. Your progress along the route is slowed by charging times. (80% in 45 minutes with a supercharger ?, I'm 100% fueled in 5) They aren't cleaner as all the hippies try to claim. They eat through tires faster. They're heavier.

Other than my 0-60 time I'm not seeing any upside other than looking down my nose at people like that prick Steven Colbert.

If you like it, that's great ? I just don't see a single advantage beyond acceleration and a lot of negatives for making the switch. Yet a lot of owners are just insufferable about the EV movement if you question it's validity for a second.

Then they're flabbergasted if the battery pack takes a dump and they get a bill from the shop for $30k to replace it. ??‍♂
I never said EV's are better, a replacement, etc... Obviously I own a Ranger (and a Audi TT) for when I want noise and to shift gears. Funny how many people are so threatened by EV's. EV's will only get better and out of the box they do so many things so well. It took a bunch of nerds (No Elon Musk didn't create the Tesla, he was the money) to shake up the auto industry.

Range is an issue which is why there is the SuperCharger network. And Your Tesla knows where they are all are, including how many people are charging at any given station. That is built in. When was the last time you drove all day? Most people commute and run errands well below the 300 mile range.

As for what EV's do so well? (IMO)
Tesla's battery warranty is 8 years. Show me an car warranty that beats that. There is no worry of a crazy repair.
There are quite a few 200k mile Tesla's out there.
No Keys, Tesla's have none. You use your smart phone, or a card to access the car.
Lights, Wipers, Heating, Cooling, Updates all automatic
Maintenance? Nearly ZERO... No Oil to change, spark plugs, air cleaners etc. Wipers/Tires are about it. Yes there is a cabin filter. The Brakes last forever because when you take your foot off the Go Pedal the car slows down and puts power back into the batteries. One Pedal driving.

For the price on paper only a Hellcat or C8 will beat one in a 1/4 mile, but in reality, AWD always beats 2WD.

And you get this every time you push the GO pedal. No Turbo lag, delay, slip.
It just gets it! Even in RAIN!
The system can sense slip and adjust so quickly.
It also doesn't drawn any attention as it's silent.

I was on my way to purchase a NEW F150 and saw a TESLA on a used lot. I always wanted to drive one and stopped in and took it for a spin, I was so impressed that I went home and ordered a new Tesla. 12 months later I bought my Ranger (as I have a boat as well). I love the Ranger (Wish it had a 6 speed manual).

I live 30 miles from town, so trips to the grocery store aren't real close. So for me the TESLA is a perfect fit. I have a home AC metering system and the Tesla runs $30-$40 a month. I have done a few long trips and it is way more comfortable than the Ranger, I am tall (6-1) and I wish the Ranger seat went back another 2 inches. Also the Self Driving is nice when traveling as you can easily do drive through to grab food and let the car drive itself.

So when you say there isn't much upside... there is quite a bit. Not to mention paying $3,4,5 a gallon for fuel, trips to the gas station, etc. You spend 5 seconds plugging in your car and it's always full. Heck for me even my local power company gives me $75 a quarter back to control when my car chargers (off peak time) and what do I care if it charges @ 5 PM or 9 PM for the next day.

I'm not a ELON FANBOY... Personally I don't care for the guy but I do like the products that Tesla makes.

Thanks for providing some useful and intelligent information along with real figures instead of over hyped news.

Now here's my input due to extensive EV use and experience over the last 5 years.

I'm a technology enthusiast and was an early adopter of EV before I even know what they were or how to use. I own 2 tesla's and drive them a lot(I also have 2 rangers still). I don't live in the city. My house is in the middle of a corn field in the country. my work is 50 miles away and the closest grocery store is 20 minutes away.

Total Miles driven for life of vehicle
2019 model 3 - 184,183 miles (only maintenance was UCA's at 100k miles or about $400)
2022 model 3 - 37,362 miles(0 mainteance so far)
total of 221,545 miles

Cost of charging in 2023
2019 model 3 drove 27,417 miles for $1597
2022 model 3 drove 28,496 miles in for $935
for a total of 55,913 miles and $2,532 or $0.04/mile

I still have my Rangers and I will always be a Ranger fanboy but for me their purpose is more suited to work around the farm and not a daily commuter

im not totally anti ev. if someone made a diesel electric hybrid truck that was tough, filled all the roles my rangers do - and was still affordable- id be happy to have it.
A Ranger PHEV is coming, but it is gas (not diesel). So far it is only announced for ROW, but I hope Ford will eventually bring it to North America.

seems like outside north america gets all the cool stuff when it comes to trucks. long beds, single cabs, even manual transmissions in some.

I would love to see a Diesel Ranger, but I think VW (now RAM) and others have taken that option to NEVER in the US.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if what this guy is saying about charging stations is accurate:

<iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https://www.facebook.com/chuck.reed.9/posts/pfbid044sAzpd5AkSmpAQ8TADV39mvpdTctGJsxMCGZLiHG5DkeN3zwfMAC61nLFfgqH9Nl&show_text=true&width=500" width="500" height="734" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" allow="autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share"></iframe>
video may not have worked but the guy is saying each of the superchargers consume about the same amount of electric as 100 homes. His math is the avg home uses just over one KW an hour an at 135 kwh which is what he was drawing at the time that equaled about 100 homes. If all six of the chargers at that station were going at the max advertised 350 kwh it was equal to about 1000 homes which shows why there are limits to the number of chargers being added. The electric companies can't supply enough.

Retired, work is a four letter word.
I am seriously thinking of getting a commuter EV, 95% of our driving is trips less than 50 miles. We have 6KW of solar so charging it once a week would be free for most of the year. We don't have to worry about cold weather as it rarely gets below 30º in winter, and gas is still above $4 a gal, and I just don't see it going lower anytime soon if at all. We have the wife's Prius for road trips (55mpg) and my Ranger for camping and off road fun. So it makes sense for us, and yes, I know the 25K for a used EV will buy a lot of gas, but I just like the idea of driving past all of those gas stations that would suck a LOT of money out of my wallet. I don't plan on using commercial charging stations at all.

That is what an EV is good for, daily driving on short trips. Going on a long trip? Wrong tool.

Just like a 3/4" ratchet is the wrong tool for tightening a 6-32 screw, and a 1/4" ratchet is the wrong tool for tightening your lug nuts.

What burns me is the gov't telling us we have to convert to EVs by a certain year, whether it works for us or not. When EVs are ready to replace gas, economics will make it happen. Gas engines replaced horses without any gov't mandate. Economics was the driver, not some gov't mandate.

What happened to the free market economy that I was taught was so great in high school?

I care nothing about EV's and especially Tesla's! Most of the ass pickles around here that have them are arrogant pricks, men and women alike! The only hybrid vehicle I've ever owned was a new 2011 Honda CR-Z, when that Obama jackass raised fuel prices to $4.25+/gallon in 2010.... We weren't making the money then, that we're making now and things got so tough on us...
