Yes, the first three digits are the width, but the 70 is the percentage of the width that makes up the height of the sidewall.
70% of 285mm = 70% of 11.22“ = 7.854” of sidewall
bottom sidewall + wheel + top sidewall = height (diameter)
7.854 + 17 + 7.854 = 32.7

I avoid that one on principle and use the offset calculator on tire size.com. I like the GUI better and it can toggle from offset to backspacing. It also gives a better sense of the difference in size, poke, and tire position…Here's a nifty online tire calculator (don't look at the URL):
