( 33”+ Tires, poor mpg. ) What tune are you running on your Ranger?

Open county what? Toto calls all the offroad tires "open country".

So you are aware you need to pay attention to the tread type and the tire weight. The heavier the tire, the less MPG you will have. The lighter it is the better the MPG can be. Also All-Terrain tires generally do better than Mud-Terrains with MPG and it looks like a Mud-Terrain on there.

As for tunes, I ran the Livernois Tow Tune. I lived it with the Firestone Destination XT in 285/70-17. Didnt have much if any issues with it.

Have you chalk tested the tires to see if your pressures are correct for wear?

I'd consider playing with your pressures.
I have not, I guess I can try that out and see what the results are

For clarification. I know big meaty tires affect MPG, I know adding weight affects MPG, and I know trucks don’t get good MPG in general. ? What I am asking is, what is your experience with 33” or bigger tires on a 19-22’ Ranger lol. I have 2 other trucks on 37s. Mpg doesn’t bother me, just curious if anyone had as big of a drop ( 23 to 14, ) as I did with a 2.5” lift and 33” tires. Seemed uncharacteristic. Don’t need the lectures, save it for the people who bought a Ranger as their first truck ever and think it’s godly lol.

I really think it might be your pressures. I'm lifted, 2" front ⅝" rear, and on the same E-Rated Toyos just in 17". My pressures don't swing near as much cold to hot as yours seem to, maybe 3-4 psi, and my truck likes to be right at 35.5 cold.

Like you I don't pay a whole lot of attention to mileage but I only lost 2-3 mpgs when I did the lift and tires. That seemed reasonable to me.

Also could it be possible that winter gas is the problem?

Everything changes MPG.

Bigger Tires

Lifts.

Levels.

Removing the front air dam.

Adding a push bar.

Adding a grill guard.

Adding light bars or round lights that air has to slam into.

Adding doo-dad attachments (wich I will self proclaim as the winner, as my truck now has the aerodynamics of of a brick sporting 4 wheels).

Understand for Ford to meet MPG estimates they have fine tuned everything down to the comical factory rake of the front nose dive.

I can get about 17.4 MPG if I grandpa the throttle and never exceed 65MPH on the highway using cruise control. Real world MPG is similar to yours, between 13.5 and 14.5 MPG

285/70/17
3" Front / 1" Rear
93 Performance Tune

300+ lbs (not including payload cargo) of permanent steel fabrications and lots of attachments that would make a wind testing engineer cry like a baby if he put it in a tunnel.

I learned that the hard way, and I maintained OEM tire size with both KO2s and Duratracs and my mileage suffered greatly.

I’ve had these 255/85/r16 Toyo Open Country’s on for about 4 months now. I’ve clocked near 7,000 miles on them, with (2) 3,000 mile rotations. My MPG has gone from 23 to 14 in that same 4 month time span. Couple that with the small gas tank on the Ranger and I’m only getting roughly 250 miles of range instead of the near 400 I used to have. I’m also looking for more power, I’ll be stepping it up to 35s for the next set of tires and I’d like to have it dialed in beforehand. That being said, what tune are y’all running on your Ranger with oversized tires? How do you like it and what MPG improvements have you seen, if any?

I run 285/70-17 Duratracs on Fox Stage 2.0z Ford Performance tune and get around 22mpg hand calculated. I think it has more to do with Toyo MT being the HEAVISET tires out there. They look awesome but they weigh a ton.

How was the power gain after tune?
The power gain was good, but the biggest change was in general drivability. The transmission didn't seem as weird. Power curve was good for accelerating. Its not a race car, but its fun to drive.

I have 285/65/18 KO2 tires which are 86 lbs on Method 313 rims, also have Fox 2.5's with 2.5 lift.
Fully loaded with skid plates, rock sliders, bed rack, RTT, steel front and rear bumpers and camping gear I am easily at around 600 to 800 lbs. I do not use it for a daily driver only off road trips. I average around 16 to 17 on most trips. I can easily drop down to 13 to 14 depending on how I drive it. Completely stock I only got around 20, and never got as high as a lot of people say they are getting. I only drove it around 500 miles before making a lot of the changes so I might have gotten higher stock if I had waited on doing the mods.
I think a lot depends on how you drive it, you can easily loose 5 or more mpg by spirited driving. Which is fun to do in the Ranger, need to be watchful and keep you foot off the gas if you want better MPG with an off road built truck.

Highway, 19 maybe...city, 17...I'm guessing I might get over 20 if I lost some weight and remove my RTT...probably over 30 if I aimed all of my lights backwards... ?

I’m gonna play with the pressures and see if it helps any. I live in Texas so I doubt it’s the gas

They’re definitely heavy, but boy are they tough

That’s exactly my problem. The mpg went from 22 to 14 on my 2020 Ranger. I’d just like to back closer to 20ish!
