I’ve had these 255/85/r16 Toyo Open Country’s on for about 4 months now. I’ve clocked near 7,000 miles on them, with (2) 3,000 mile rotations. My MPG has gone from 23 to 14 in that same 4 month time span. Couple that with the small gas tank on the Ranger and I’m only getting roughly 250 miles of range instead of the near 400 I used to have. I’m also looking for more power, I’ll be stepping it up to 35s for the next set of tires and I’d like to have it dialed in beforehand. That being said, what tune are y’all running on your Ranger with oversized tires? How do you like it and what MPG improvements have you seen, if any?

How are you calculating you MPG? With that big of a change, I'm almost thinking you are basing it on the old rolling diameter. If your odometer/speedometer is not recalibrated your vehicle thinks it's traveling less miles than it actually is because at the same speed your tires are rotating slower than the originals.

Everything changes MPG.

Bigger Tires

Lifts.

Levels.

Removing the front air dam.

Adding a push bar.

Adding a grill guard.

Adding light bars or round lights that air has to slam into.

Adding doo-dad attachments (wich I will self proclaim as the winner, as my truck now has the aerodynamics of of a brick sporting 4 wheels).

Understand for Ford to meet MPG estimates they have fine tuned everything down to the comical factory rake of the front nose dive.

I can get about 17.4 MPG if I grandpa the throttle and never exceed 65MPH on the highway using cruise control. Real world MPG is similar to yours, between 13.5 and 14.5 MPG

285/70/17
3" Front / 1" Rear
93 Performance Tune

300+ lbs (not including payload cargo) of permanent steel fabrications and lots of attachments that would make a wind testing engineer cry like a baby if he put it in a tunnel.

Here is a depiction of my truck and aerodynamics;

How did you correct the odometer. Me thinks it was done wrong.

I run virtually the same tire in 17", 255 80/R17, and average 19-20.

Shop that installed the lift, tires, and wheels did it. It’s definitely possible they didn’t do it correctly

Is your speedometer accurate with your GPS speed readout?

I'm only running 32" tires and my true speed is about 2 mph faster than the speedo shows.

One day I'll adjust it but that'll be when I get a round tuit.

It was about 4-5 mph off at first. Doesn’t seem to be more than 1 mph off the gps after being calibrated

I'm on 33s with lift, steel bumper, winch, roof rack, tonnneau racks and no tune. I'm still very happy with performance, and don't pay attention to MPG. When the tank gets low, I pull in the next convenient gas station and fill up. I don't normally look at the price, or how much went in. I use electronic payment, and squeeze until it kicks out. Replace the nozzle, close the tank and drive away. I drive for the situation, conditions, or the fun of it. MPG isn't going to change any of that, so I don't bother to track it or pay attention to it. The only times I have checked my MPG was for discussions on here.

I'd strongly reconsider going with 35s until someone finally makes gears for our trucks. You'd be putting immense strain on the entire powertrain.
There is a replacement clamshell for the front now, so... technically gears are available.

To the OP, I would definitely check the speedometer. I run 285/75r17s and I get 20-21 during the summer and 16-17 with winter fuel. I was getting 21-22 with the 255/80r17s.
EDIT: I forgot to add, I have the Ford Performance tune. I love it.

BLUF: I don't know of a tune that will undo adding weight and large tires to your truck.

There is a large correlation between the speed with which the skinny pedal is pressed and mpg. As there is a correlation between length of time said skinny pedal spends on the floorboards and mpg.

Just because you have "the same size tires" or "same modifications" someone has doesn't mean they will get the same results. (this goes for a lot of things from mpg's to overall performance)

What is the weight difference in the new tires VS old tires? When you increase tire size you increase unsprung weight.

Those big manly tires might look great, but they come at a cost. There is a reason many folks have dedicated off-road rigs that they trailer in. They have done the calculus and realized they want the off road performance and are willing to sacrifice onn road manners to get it. (they also might just have more money to throw at the problem).
