I know this has been brought up in other mpg threads but I don't think we've ever had one dedicated to this. I usually fill up when a 1/4 tank is left but with gas being so high now I've been filling up right around the 1/2 way mark. It's just a little less painful even though you're spending the same amount in the end. I had an ex who'd run it down to fumes!

So are you conservative and fill up early or adventurous and live on the edge??

Somewhere between 1/2 and 1/4 mostly. I don't want to get caught short if I have to go anywhere on the spur of the moment, and I don't like to live dangerously and run to the fumes.

With the Ranger, I don't let it go below 1/4 tank. With the ole 2003 Mountaineer, I don't often run it down to E, but I have and I know I can go pretty far when the getting low light comes on. I use the Mountaineer mainly for running back and forth to the barn (about 700' feet) to take care of my horses... I always have two cans of regular gas over there in the garage for the ATV and riding lawn mower, so if I ran it way too low and think I need gas to to make it the 4 miles to the gas station, I put some in over there.

On a side note, I was reading a little news blurp that said the best (meaning cheapest) day of the week to buy gas was Tuesday. I don't now if that's true around here though, once they get the price up there, it doesn't seem to go any lower during the week.

That right there is what use to happen a lot because she loved to drive on fumes. She'd come to my place and we're getting ready to leave and her car is on E. I lived out in the country and the gas station wasn't all that close by. I'd ask her why didn't you fill up on the way over? Her: I didn't want to get my hands dirty and smelling like gas. :headbang:

It never seems to go down here only up. I went to work this morning and it was $4.67 for regular and coming home they raised it to $4.75. :curse:

At about a quarter to half a tank

Same reason. If i fill it up at half it feels like i dont spend as much. Like you i know in the end i pay the same. Or i wait till empty if upside has a good deal on gas.

i can save up to $0.60 a gal if i go to the right spot. don't always have the time to get there during the week so If I'm really low but can't get to that gas station, I'll put in a gal or two when it's already on empty just to get to the weekend. still be on empty when I get there.

With T-Mobile phone, I get 5¢ off per gallon at Shell stations, once per week. Couple that with the Shell rewards 5¢ per gallon and you're talking about some savings. That all leads to, I fill up every week, simply because I lose it if I don't use it.
