I did this….

Big split in the sidewall of the factory tire. First time I had taken it on a gravel road. Had some big potholes, but there are regular cars that drive down there routinely to get to a kids camp. I actually passed a mini when I was driving out.

Dealer says it can’t be warrantied. 1500kms on the truck. So, the question is, did I get extremely unlucky or these tires that bad? I bought the truck to do a lot worse that this to it, and not really trusting the tires now.

$330 for a replacement tire. Don’t really want to by a full new set.

thoughts?

Defective tire
That was my thought. They disagree, saying that it is the result of aside impact. While that may be true, I am not sure how much I trust these tires to go into the backcountry given they failed on my first outing. Will keep fighting this though....

Chance to put $330 for an upgrade :like: While the tires are new, there ARE better for the Rangers. Even if it's only a street tire. IMHO
I agree. but was hoping to run down these factory tires a bit before I replace them, or thought about keeping them for road and getting a second set on steelies for off-road. Just didn't;t want to spend it now. Dropping $2K next week when my tonneau finally arrives.

This is not a defective tire. It was cut by something. OE tires do not come with a warranty, except covering defective tires. No tire place will be able to get it covered, as Hankook won't cover it. No tire shop is going to eat the cost of the tire.

You can try going to Discount Tire and asking them to do a 5 cert deal. Basically, you buy 4 tire warranties on the tires, plus a fifth warranty to cover the tire replaced. Probably cost the same(ish) as a new tire, but you'll have coverage on all tires.

You're welcome to fight to get that replaced, but I can tell you now, it won't happen. Even if you fight with Hankook, they are going to say you hit something.

Tires made for OE vehicles are not the same as the production version of the same tire. They're primary focus is quiet ride on your test drive (NVH ratings), not anything else.

Agreed.

You admitted going on a gravel road, and now there appears to be a laceration on the sidewall.

You hit something, probably a rock.

Ouch, that sucks and your spare is likely a smaller wheel size. Oh man.

Thanks for the advice. Am kinda resigned to that outcome.

Agree. It is disconcerting to have an advertised "off road" tire get damaged so easily on a first run "on" (an admittedly not paved) road. Makes me concerned for the first time I actually take it off road.
