Nice Idea... for tie downs and light stuff gear will be cool. Wonder if it renders warranty null by altering the lid.
For the tailgate I'm sure it messes up the warranty. Other than that it shouldn't affect the warranty whatsoever

Yeah unless ford did it where they didnt have problems then sure. That system from Ram is a pile of shit to say the least.
When you say that it is a "pile of shit," what do you mean exactly? What kind of problems do they have? What would Ford have to do with it to make it right? I love the concept but don't really understand all the issues involved in making it work. I also find the tailgate-opening options on the Ram and the Ridgeline interesting also and would wonder how these work in practice. Note that I am not really planning on buying one of these trucks, just rather hoping that Ford will get more creative with the bed and tailgate on the next generations of Rangers and 150s.

Actually I like the idea. I am constantly looking for a storage option of low usage frequency items but necessary to have along: recovery gear, compressor, tools, etc. The underseat area and behind bench are already taken up by stuff …

One option that I am considering it to somehow use the inside of the spare wheel space. Wondering if the spare wheel could be mounted upside down with a longer chain?

Last year when I was working at the dealership in Salida I was shown that on a brand new truck(Ram of course) it was 95% guaranteed that the side boxes wpuld not open. Most pf the time just one but still no suprise if both dis it.

This web site is a mine field full of suckers willing to re engineer a new truck. LOL ROTFFLOL. I suppose we will never get the posts where this junk has fu their truck.
Says the guy who "re-engineered" his dash mat in order to see his brake lights better?

Also, if you have to ask how 4x4 operates, best to keep tools out of your hand when near your truck.

This is a neat idea.

But I can think of a lot other things I'd rather do to my truck for $600.

What's it made of? Looks like plastic, but I'd hope it was steel.

The LandCruiser versions that they sell run about $350. That seems like a more reasonable price for some plastic, carpet, hardware, and struts.

It is steel. Why it cost $600 is beyond me. Is it worth it? Id say so. Can you spen $600 on other things? Yrs but to an extent like anything else

As mentioned before with this new compartment put in it still holds his structural integrity. It might be hard for you to believe sense some of the internal parts were removed but then again how often are you really going to throw 485 lb on to the tailgate?
I really like the idea of the tailgate for storage,to keep things like straps etc. in the bed area and ready, but have and do load a golf cart (600 lbs before my 205lb ass climbs on it),motorcycles etc. into the bed with load ramps. So I guess I need to study the design and attachment to see if it does maintain enough structural ability to handle loading the toys..

Really clever idea though.

So. how many years back did you go to find that I opened up a little of my dash mat so my safety equip was improved. According to the directions that came with the mat. RONTFFLOL

I dont have to ask how my 4x4 works????? Another ROTFFLOL
"This site is full of suckers" I rest my case.

With it being steel that makes the price closer to expected. And a second look shows the Land Cruiser ones to be less refined.

I'll file this one away as a possible solution to any storage problems in the future.

You got any pics/vids of the install process? Instruction sheet you could post?

No video and no print out of the instructions as I was the first one on the NA to get this. My guess is Ford decided to be Ford and make things different between here and the rest of the world.

What had to be done? Remove the top plate. Drill all the rivits on the top(over 20 of them). Use the supplies stencil(yes it works well)and Mark on the tailgate for the cutout(take your time with it too). After that remove the stencil and cut away. After that you need to remove the main inner support. To do so drill out the rivits on the sided(4 in total) cut the support twoards one of the ends and use a hack saw blade or similar to cut the foam between the support and tailgate. You will need to cut the support by the handle but not much. Once that is done install the new latch rods then go for fitting the storage compartment. This is where it gets fun if you disnt cut all the notches out from the stencil. If you dis then you may be ok. After doing the necessary trimming you are set to secure it. It is supplied with self tapping screws(sounds cheap I know but they use square drive heads for anti theft and hold it in place very well). After that you are basically done.

Got to respect the ingenuity with this mod. Removal of the center support assembly the jury is still out on that one with me. That’s all incorporated into crash testing, load rating. I use ramps and load a 36” snow blower among other things. Different strokes for different folks.

That's too much modification for me probably. Despite the amount of room it provides, I can't see it being worth enough to me to justify.

I could get down with a smaller one though. It could use the same mounting location as the top plate. Steel lid, hinge and ring to seal to, carpeted plastic insert straddling the center support to take advantage of any knook and cranny. It could be two smaller compartments with separate doors even. That'd be enough for me probably. And it'd be reversible.
