Rent a U-Haul truck to tow the trailer- that's what we did when we moved to Texas...

This.

It's not like they follow you after you pick up the trailer to see what you're putting on it.

However, lying on the paperwork could make one liable if things go south.

Also, OP, perhaps they denied you because of this.

Google says a '72 F-100 comes in @ 4450 lbs. Which means tow vehicle must weigh 5328 lbs to meet their standard. The heaviest Rangers are about 4500 lbs according to google.
I think this is the problem. I didn’t realize how light the Rangers are. I may need to come up with another solution i.e tow it 2 down.

Earlier it was suggested that renting a U-Haul truck and the car hauler might be the way to go.

Get a tow bar and flat tow it behind the Ranger.

Thing that is stopping you from getting a U-haul is the width of the truck. Not the weight. The Auto transport and tow dolly are designes for midsize and compact vehicles. The F-100 is a full size and will not fit. That is the issue.

A 1972 F100 has a total width of 60.4 inches according to Ford.

Deck width on a U-Haul Auto Transporter is 79.22 inches. OP's truck doesn't seem to have 18inch wide tires on it.

It'll fit.

I can see this being the hot tip. Put it on a dolly if they'll let you rent that.

dolly is even more of a no-go. it doesn't have brakes, and requires that the tow vehicle be 750 pounds heavier than the towed vehicle. so it still has a u-haul requirement that will prevent you from getting it, and has the practical limitation that it's questionably legal in many (most?) states and IMO unsafe anywhere.

(I've seen mixed info on whether there is a braked dolly available, so it's possible that they do exist sometimes or in some places, in which case adjust the above.)

Yeah, and you don't want to flat tow either. It needs to go on a trailer...

I wouldn't know about U-Haul. My last two trucks were Sport Tracs and they won't rent to anything with Explorer in its name.
