I just updated my tuner and now have the towing tune offered by Livernois. I think this would be my best option for a daily tune. Who's running it and what do you think? My powertrain is stock I just have a small lift, 2.5 inch, and 265/70/17s.

I just got my tunes yesterday and flashed the 91/93 Performance Tune. I am going to run it for a couple of weeks then get a Dyno report.
I'll then flash the Towing Tune and do the same. I have a Dyno report on the stock tune and the Ford Performance tune so I am looking forward to seeing the numbers.
I will probably run the Towing Tune as a daily driver.

I've had my Livernois tune for almost 2 weeks now and I have the same lift and tires size as you. I've been running the 91-93 performance tune and really like it. I do have all their tunes but haven't tries the others yet. I might play around with the others but so. far I'm liking this one.

I know it smooths out after a while and it felt really noticeable at first with the harsher shift. I might just be use to it now but it seems like it's lacking a little power from when I first installed it. I know the heat is a big factor too but the low - mid seems a little sluggish lately but it has been 112 out although it's been that hot since the day I installed it.

For me the shifting is spot on right out of the box. Truck shifts about 200 rpm later and the shifts are real firm but not clunky. Also noticed the boost increased to 24 psi (2 pounds over the FP Tune and 4 pounds over stock). Only have 80 miles on the truck with this tune so it is really early yet.

I know you just installed it but did you get a chance to put a few miles on it yet? Was wondering if you could compare the Ford tune to this one.

You read my mind. lol My shifts were pretty harsh for the first 30 miles or so now it's very smooth.

I too have the same question. Would like to hear from folks actually running the tow tune.

I normally run the soft shift 91/93, but use the tow tune when actually towing. It does a fantastic job towing and also runs really well when just cruising around after setting up the camper.

it only takes a couple of minutes to load the tunes so why not see what they all have to offer.

Concerning the 91/93: I got over 27 mpg on a 500 mile round trip. Not sure how the tow tune will do, but probably comparable.

I myself am running the tow tune on my truck too. Yes it is Livernois and I can tell you that I'm impressed with it. Yes to performance tune was nice but I don't feel like swapping between Tunes when I have to tow and when I go Offroad. You might be thinking why would this guy not want to have the performance tune while Offroad? It's quite simple really when you're Offroad you want low-end torque and the tow tune gives the right amount of low-end torque boost compared to the performance tune which gives you more of a high-end power. When you're Offroad on the street or Towing low end of where you want it. I have the old man emu lift with 265 70 17 Bridgestone Dueler Revo 3 S and I can still average 24 or better 4 fuel mileage as long as the right conditions are met.

What’s the consensus on the tow tune vs running your truck stock for towing? Is there any argument to be made that the tune provides extra protection to the powertrain with its firmer shifts and extra power or is it inherently increasing the risk to the engine and turbo due to the increased power? I tow a moderate amount of weight, 2500lbs, so if it provides better fuel economy and no real further risk to the powertrain I can more easily justify my position to tune the truck. Obviously with the performance tune you’re always increasing the potential for a mechanical failure but the tow tune seems like it would be different based on the fact you’re increasing the load on the engine and transmission anyhow.

To answer your question I would suggest contacting some of the reputable tuners including Livernois. I myself did tow up to 5500 lb with my truck with the tow tune. When I got my Tunes to begin with the tow tune wasn't available right away and I did ask if it was safe to use the tunes or if I would have to go to stock. They told me specifically to not use the performance tunes for towing ever. They said go back to stock if you do need to tow. After I got my tow tune I installed it and left it on ever since and have only towed a few times. I have never told before having any tunes so I can't say for comparison reasons. For better fuel mileage? It is possible but remember where the gas engine when your towing fuel mileage will fall through the floor most of the time. Without increasing the risk of failure? It is possible which is why it's called a tow tune and not a performance tune but I still suggest contacting the tuner you are considering going with.

For clarity I should have mentioned that my interest strictly lies in the Livernois tunes, that’s the direction I’m going. Some official word from Livernois makes a lot of sense but some real world experience of many people here who have tuned these trucks As well. Specifically their tow tune as well as any previous experience tuning for towing on other vehicles. Not trying to highjack here, this just seems like a good place for any additional discussion on this particular tune.

That is a fair thing to ask. It might even be one of the reasons why this particular thread got started for all I know. I will also state that with any tune you can always have the chance of increasing risk of failure. It's just the joy of a tune because that's not where the manufacturer put the levels of power. With my experience I can say I'm not too concerned about the heavy risk while using the tow tune especially if I'm towing. I feel the power response you get with the tow tune is pretty nice overall and the shifting quality is improved in general. Now I still hit the tow button if I'm doing any Towing. For drivability it does pretty well especially since it's more geared on the low to mid-range power which helps for not just Towing but also Street driving and off-road driving. Something to be aware of his wants you to in the truck even with the Livernois tune the transmission is going to be shifting rough as if it were brand new it will take a few thousand miles to smooth out. It's just a fact of life with these trucks and we all have to tolerate it. I've been running the tune for close to 10,000 miles and I myself like it.

Can confirm! The 91/93 when offroading in 4Lo seems to do funny things. Can't really articulate it but had some hairy moments on some rocks! Never got to try the tow tune off-road but suspect Frenchy is correct in his assessment.

I can't remember for sure or not if i went off road with the high octane tune but with the tow tune it does pretty well. U also keep it installed since I dont feel like having the transmission relearning every time.
