I've heard from some sources that waiting until the 10K mark to change the oil would be foolish. That the turbo charged engine puts more pressure and heat on the oil, and should be changed sooner? That makes sense to me, but what are other peoples ideas? And what oil brand are people using?

The Ford engineers are probably way smarter than me. With that being said I changed to Mobil 1 full synthetic at 3500 miles. I'll do an oil and filter change every 6000/8000 miles.

I followed the manufacturer's guidelines. The little light went on telling me to change the oil, and I naively assumed that ford knew what they were doing and that it was time to change the oil.

You're free to change your oil as often as you'd like. It's your money. But I see no reason why Ford would give us an incorrect maintenance schedule. They know the truck and the engine better than anyone. Certainly better than Joe Schmo down the street who once heard something fourth-hand 30 years ago and now lives by it.

I'll change my oil, or have it changed, when the truck and maintenance book tell me to, and I'm comfortable doing that.

Ford dealer will be changing my oil every 5K miles for the next couple of years (it's "free").
Then I'll have my local guy doing it every 5K miles til the truck dies.
At least that's the plan...

Those "sources" likely didn't complicate things with actual factual evidence when they came to the conclusion that 10k is too long, but rather just relied on intuition and reckoning. When the engineers concluded that 10k miles was a good interval, they knew full well that the engine was turbocharged and what that means for oil wear.

Of course, I say that, but I myself did the first oil change at 2k miles. As much as the logical side of my brain knows that the engineers know a thing or two about the requirements of this engine, I couldn't let go of the idea that it might help to change it sooner.

First oil change I used the Motorcraft synthetic blend. Next oil change I'll go full synthetic, brand TBD.

I got 20 free oil changes from the dealer. I take my truck in when the truck's puter tells me to and eat the free bagels, drink free coffee, and use the free wifi to surf porn sites while I wait.

Hi Bobby,

We drop off the Truck....then head to the sports bar around the corner for a Beer (or two) and burger. Coach's Bar Montana Burger is Superb!

I'm going to go with 5K oil change intervals...that would be 3 per year. I did the first one at 3500. I used Rotella gas truck 10w30. I plan on getting an oil analysis when I change it an if results are I'm leaving a ton of live on the table I may stretch it a little but personally I won't go near 10K in a turbo motor the way I drive it.

Hey Phil,
You have a much better option than I do. It's at least 2 miles to the nearest watering hole/eatery from my dealership...so I have to settle for the coffee and bagels.

I have a question about this as well, Im a person that only drives about 3 miles to work everyday and i probably wont even have 3,500 miles by the time Ive had the truck for a year. Should I just change the oil yearly anyway? Also, I bought the truck with 6 miles on it so i'm still on the same oil from the factory. Do I need to change that factory oil sooner? (kinda like a break in oil I guess) I have 1,200 miles on it. Bought it in March this year. Thanks

Not that you necessarily care, but doesn't the truck alter the miles to the next change automatically based on your driving style? I believe it says that in the manual. A more "spirited" or hard towing/hauling style will lower the interval since the engine is working harder. Mine's basically on the max interval because my engine barely ever gets 1000 revs over idle and hardly works at all. haha

The manual says "do not exceed 1 year or 10k miles between service intervals". In practice, the service light will probably come on around the 1 year mark regardless of miles.

What Mike said.

Manual doesn't say that it needs changed sooner, so probably not. I went ahead and did my first change at 2000 miles just because it made me feel better, but honestly it probably didn't make an appreciable difference in the engine lifespan.
