Thank you, JohnnyO!
Just peel the flap back and stick it back on. Literally cuts the time to change the oil in half.

theres just no easy way to not make a mess
Actually since the first change I've gotten pretty good with the whole filter thing. It does take focus and slow deliberate effort. I also put a wad of paper towels right beneath it which helps with the drops I simply cannot avoid.

I ordered stick on magnets from ebay. Just searched stick on magnets. Cleaned metal surface behind flap. Stuck on one. Cleaned flap, stuck its opposite on. PERFECT. Someone here recommended magnets.
Speeds up change. Can change filter with tire turned to right, or tire removed.
Engine oil drained first. No mess, but like another post, I put paper towels beneath filter.
You'll get faster w8th practice!

One thing that I have found doing an oil change on the Ranger is to take the oil filter off with the drain plug still removed. If you don't do this, dirty oil is still trapped in the engine. I found this out by draining the oil, putting the drain plug back in, removing the oil filter and then removing the oil drain plug again. Quite a bit more dirty oil came out. So, I recommend leaving the drain plug out while removing the oil filter.

I did the magnet thing about a year ago.....so much easier. 1 inch, 100 lb, Neo magnets....6 of them on Amazon for $9 bucks....
