Blackstone test results. Still an issue with high level on dipstick and viscosity change.
Assuming your oil change interval is right on the results, that seems pretty reasonable to me. After 5500 miles you lose a bit of viscosity from 5w30 to 5w20 and still <2% fuel in the oil. Their comments also indicate that these are perfectly acceptable values for our engines.

Here are my results after 1170 miles. Notes spoke about high copper and silicone worth eyeing and noting as DA ranger. Seems ok. I changed the oil and will do another test in 5k miles. Any input appreciated. So far smell is allowable. Piece of mind worth the $.

Initial fill, 6,520 miles, was ~3/8" above full hole, getting close to twist in dipstick. Changed at dealer yesterday. They were a joke. Guy who checked me in left before completed and guy who gave me keys was clueless to my discussion with first guy. Need to follow up with those clowns. Dates below.

DAVID: Fuel dilution measured at 4.3% of this sample -- that's excessive enough to show a possible
problem. The viscosity tested thin, maybe due to the fuel (though it's not uncommon for factory oils to be a
little thin anyway). Copper and silicon are elevated compared to averages, but they're just from wear-in and
sealers and should improve with time. Maybe fuel will improve going forward too, if some of it's just
operational or related to the rings seating, for example. Change this oil and monitor for a rising oil level as a
precaution. Check back on fuel dilution.

Sorry to hear dealer was slacking. I’d call ford corporate immediately. Get them involved. That’s not right. Please keep us update.

Ok, so my 2nd oil change was done at 6000 miles. (4k) Then, I read on other Ranger websites, of some owners dealing with a "increase", in oil level following their oil/filter change, possibly due to fuel getting into the crankcase. I wasn't careful when setting/adding the oil to my engine, just dumped in the 6 quarts, ran it checking for leakage, pulled the stick, verified in-between the marks, and motored on--since reading about this issue, (mileage now at 7000), I checked the level after sitting o/nite--level is 1/4" over full mark. Will continue to monitor, but I'm wondering if the "design" of the high pressure pump, allows a small amount of fuel, over time, to enter the engine/work past the pump interior, just as a characteristic?? My fuel mileage is great, and have no driveability issues, but this alone would be cause to change oil at 3k intervals.

FOLLOW UP----So, this morning I checked my oil level--used same method described above, including picture this time-- Mileage on truck at 7900, so 900 mile since first level ck/establishment with all in town/daily commute use. Oil change, was at 6k, (1900 mile back), and I am seeing NO INCREASE in level in crankcase. Appears no change in level, fuel mileage (4x2) is in town, 25 mpg/hwy at up to 30mpg.

Has anyone determined a fix?. Has anyone replaced the high pressure fuel pump seals to see if it worked?. Just wondering. Mine only has 200 miles on it so far. Going to change the oil at 2500 miles the i will start to monitor it from there. I feel, I need to get through the break in period first.

My oil spelled like gas and was above the full hole and smelled like gas when I checked it So I took it to the dealership at 3k miles and asked them to change the oil and mentioned that. I also asked them to take a sample. I got the results back this week and it said I had 3% fuel dilution. I called the dealer back and they asked me to drive another 3k miles and do another oil change and sample. They say if it comes back high again they will take the truck and do some testing.

Could it have been high on your dip stick from the start? The crankcase capacity is 6.2 quarts and with 3% fuel dilution that would correspond to .186 of a quart. Seems like that amount of fuel in your oil would be almost undetectable on your dip stick.

I checked it after letting it sit on level ground all night.

Very informative--A baseline to compare against, is very important to solve any problem. You say 2000 mile oil change--is this the first??

No the 3rd...I change it before I go to the track..but that was 2000 miles with no track time.

Keep seeing mentions of the fuel dilution being normal in "small turbocharged engines". Well here is a analysis of an 8500 mi interval done on 17 Focus st (stage 3 FBO with stratified tune)

Notice how the fuel dilution only came up as trace? so how is it that Rangers are consistently coming in at 1.5, 2 and sometimes even higher fuel dilution. I don't buy all at that it is "normal" something is going on that wasn't going on in my ST. And i'd like to know what. Im running this exact oil in my Ranger currently only ill be changing it at 5k this time and sending in for analysis to compare to the ST.

Thoughts?

Yeah it's definitely an issue unique to the Ranger's 2.3, and doesn't seem to be shared with the STs or Mustangs. Yet another reason to suspect an accessory as the culprit, most likely the high pressure fuel pump.

This thread has been open since October. These engines should have exploded like a grenade by now. Anyone have any feed back from Ford or a dealership other than observation of the oil level and sniffing for fuel?
