Is there any data that compares the difference between any of the performance tunes and sport mode in an un-modified vehicle? It would be great to see a compare of 0-60 time-speed, qtr mile time-speed, MPG, and or other measures with controls like same fuel octane, same tire type-size ect. This would really help people know what the difference really is.

I can't say for sure if anyone actually has one hundred percent comparable data on a tuned-in drive vs. Sport mode in an unmodified truck. What I can say is in my truck which I went with Livernois I did gain fuel mileage when I added the tune. Mind you that is still with trying to keep a moderate foot and hoping that conditions aren't too bad. How much did I gain on average? How to say write about between 1 to 2 miles per gallon for an average and that's what you'll see for most Tunes. Also if you're going to do it soon make sure you go with a reputable company like livernois's or Ford performance.

One user here did have a catastrophic failure however Ford either would not did not know or refused to give him details. Ford just use the you had a tune installed got you and that's all the owner could get from them.

It should be noted that engine failures with a tune at least in our trucks but I would guess across the board you would have a better chance of being struck by lightning if we were talking purely percentage numbers on your motor dying.

It all depends on what tune as well. If I'm not mistaken it was the Unleashed tune that particular user had. I'm curious if the same failure will happen on a truck without a tune. I won't be surprised if such happens.

Sport mode doesn't really change the vehicle's performance per se, more so the vehicle's feel. It's mainly a shift schedule and a driver demand/ Electronic throttle change meant to make the truck more responsive to driver input and hold gears longer in hilly areas .

It was a 5Star tune. Lucky for him he bought the warrantee from 5Star which covered the whole mess he went through.

That actually makes me giggle! I've already not been a fan of the five star tune for the fact that it does not use barometric compensation when the factory and other Tunes do use it. This just helps to prove five star just really have the best of computer software for our trucks.

haven't installed my livernois tunes yet cuz i've gotten gun shy. this thread certainly eases my nerves, that it wasn't a livernois truck/tune.

that, and i only have my work computer which apparently you need triple authentication clearance nuclear launch codes in order to install a damn computer program...

in the short term, I did the ol' switch-to-93-from-87 tune.

I myself run the Livernois tune and I can tell you it's worth it. It does use the barometric compensation so if you are at close to sea level with where you live and you decide to take a random trip to somewhere else that is a much higher elevation like the Colorado Rockies for example you won't have any drivability issues that are major just for the fact that the truck will still be able to compensate for the high altitude. I know this because I live in Colorado and also got to take a trip to Michigan a month-and-a-half ago and didn't have any drivability issues whatsoever.

Matt I along with many others have been using the Livernois tune with great results. I wouldn't worry about it and install it, you'll be glad you did! I found that I like the 91-93 soft shift tune the best.

As much as the high-octane performances nice I myself stuck with the tow tune for the fact that I tell enough every so often that I'd rather not switch tunes and go back into relearn mode with the transmission.

That's what I love about the Livernois tune is you can try them all out and see which one fits your driving style. I tried the tow and both performance tunes and liked the soft shift one the best. But here I'm at 1,000' so everything mostly flat and I don't tow anything anymore. When we head up north to Sedona or Flagstaff I'll be at 7,000'. Like you said it's nice that it adjusts itself and there's no performance loss going from different altitudes.

It sounds like you are trying to convince yourself sport mode is just as good as a tune. It’s not.

Be aware though that even with Ford approved tunes your warranty is short and you own it from that point on. So if you bought an extended warranty that’s just one more thing you need to take into consideration
